Class Experience

US Grade 6 - 9
In this four week, eight class workshop for young writers, I will be going over a bunch of tips and tricks as to how to create a character to use in stories. Often, students have big ideas for a character, but are discouraged from writing because it's hard to decide exactly how to make that character seem "real". This is a three day class, so each day will be another step in how to develop a character that any reader would easily get attached to. Mainly, students will learn valuable tools that they can use in the future. In addition, the goal of this three day class is to develop one character sufficiently enough to be able to use them in a story that students will hopefully write one day! I encourage anyone who is passionate about writing to attend!

Each week will focus on a different aspect of character building, and each day will include writing time built into the lesson in order to put what we discuss into practice. Students are encouraged to write outside of class as well, but this is not required.

The class format will look like this:

Week 1 - Character creation - The "Character House"
Week 2 - Character relationships and interactions
Week 3 - Characters in conflict and facing problems
Week 4 - Character resolution and story arc
Learning Goals
Students will learn how to build a compelling character and how to use the same strategies learned here for character-building in the future. By the end of the three days, students should feel very confident about the character they've made.
