Class Experience

Conversation hearts are fun to give to friends, but did you know that they can be used in science experiments? It is true! In this class, learners will learn about the scientific method as they complete two experiments using conversation hearts.

How is the class structured?
The class will start with a fun ice breaker game that allows learners to get comfortable in class while they wait for their peers. Next, we will do introductions and talk about the Scientific Method. After we review the Scientific Method, we will complete two science experiments.

Experiment 1: Sink or Float Conversation Hearts
Learners will predict and test what happens to converastion hearts when placed in three different types of liquids.

Experiment 2: Dancing Hearts
Learners will explore the chemical reactions that create dancing conversation hearts.

At the end of class, we will review what we learned and analyze the results. Finally, learners will be allowed to eat the extra box of conversation hearts (with parental permission, of course)! :)

Learners will need:
20 conversation hearts (plus some for eating)
3 clear cups
Water
Sprite or ginger ale
Vinegar
Baking Soda
Tablespoon
A deep tray or cooking dish
