Christmas Drawing Club

In this ongoing Christmas art club, students will learn to draw a variety of holiday themed subjects using colored pencil and pencil (polar bear and Christmas tree, gnome Christmas tree, Santa's elf and presents, and Santa Claus).

Please note that since this is an ongoing course, students can enroll or withdraw at any time.  Each scheduled meeting will be spent drawing ONE picture and learning different colored pencil/sketching techniques.  Students do not need to be enrolled in previous weeks of this class to be successful.  Please check the weekly break-down below for specific learning goals of each class.  Please check the scheduled times below to see which week each drawing will be taught and the materials needed for each drawing, (found in the supply list). 

For every class, I will demonstrate each step for students and have students complete that step along with me.  My classroom is a calm, fun, and creative environment where discussion between teacher and students is encouraged and a great place for students to make lasting friendships.  I ask students questions throughout the lesson to check for student understanding.  Students may also interact with each other if they want to share what they have learned during class.  Students who enroll in this class should have basic drawing skills, like drawing and manipulating shapes with a pencil.  

What will students learn?

Week of November 27 - December 3: Polar Bear and Christmas Tree

1. Students will learn techniques to sketch a proportionate contour drawing (outline) of a polar bear (full body) and Christmas tree. 
2. Students will learn techniques for blending, applying, and layering colored pencil.
3. Students will learn techniques to create shadows for snow and white fur, using colored pencil.
4. Students will learn techniques for burnishing colored pencil to make it look smooth.
5. Students will learn techniques to draw snow falling, using colored pencil.
6. Students will learn a few facts about polar bears.

Week of December 4 - 10: Gnome Christmas Tree

1. Students will learn techniques to sketch a proportionate contour drawing (outline) of a stacked gnome Christmas tree. 
2. Students will learn techniques for smooth blending, pencil application, gradient blending, and adding contrast.
3. Students will learn shading techniques for creating a balanced composition, using positive and negative space.
4. Students will learn techniques to add interest in their art with different sizes and shapes of gnomes to create a Christmas tree.
5. Students will learn techniques for drawing glowing Christmas lights, using colored pencil.

Week of December 11 - 17: Santa's Elf and Presents

1. Students will learn techniques to sketch a gesture drawing of Santa's elf sitting on a stack of presents. 
2. Students will learn techniques to create depth in their drawings, using colored pencil.
3. Students will learn techniques to draw a bow and Christmas presents, using colored pencil.
4. Students will learn a few facts about the history of Santa's elves.

Week of December 18 - 24: Santa Claus with Toy Bag and List (Full Body)

1. Students will learn techniques for sketching a proportionate contour drawing (outline) of Santa Claus (full body), using pencil. 
2. Students will learn techniques for smooth blending, pencil application, gradient blending, and adding contrast.
3. Students will learn techniques to create white hair texture, using pencil and an eraser.
4. Students will learn techniques to create highlights on Santa's suit, using pencil and an eraser.
5. Students will learn a few facts about the history of Santa Claus.
