This is a semi private class for students who know or have taken our Intermediate Level 1 and wish to advance further. We will learn game plans in an active learning mode to develop our critical strategic thinking skills. #superstar

Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 6
Intermediate Level
This is a level for students who know the game and are in the intermediate level. The teacher is an international ranked player with peak fide rating of 1484. 

The lesson plans are carefully chosen to give the students an edge on understanding and learning advanced moves for chess. Live games, puzzles and notations will be discussed to delve deeper into each chapter. The chapters, in no particular order, will contain topics like:

Day 1 – Weakness of back rank  

Pieces that can give back rank mate  

Self blocking pawns and pieces 

Keeping the position closed for the opponent king  

Focus on opponent king's escape route  

Using open files for back rank mate  

How to open files to exploit the back rank weakness and using situational pins 

 

Day 2 – principles of attacking key points : 

Open files and closed files for Open positions and closed positions  

Active pieces  

Attacker opens position like files , defender closes opened files and positions. 

Attacker avoids exchange without good reason , defender prefers exchange  

If you don’t have forcing moves or important moves to play , then activate your pieces  

Avoid weak pawn structures – like isolated pawns to keep king safe  

Discuss about offensive superiority  

Mention how offensive superiority is always followed by a sacrifice or a combination for mate  

Describe destructive sacrifice  

 

Day 3 – Attacking when king is left in centre  

Importance of castling  

Stopping castling  

Identifying weak king signs like no legal move left for the king, king blocked by his own pieces.  

Using a forcing move to prevent king from castling  

 

 

Day 4- Castling to opposite sides  

What is castling to opposite sides mean  

Why should you castle on opposite sides  

Pawn storm, its advantage in castling on opposite sides and and how to defend it  

Opening file for attack , maintaining offensive superiority 

One who makes a stronger first attack gets advantage  

How pieces should be developed to the opponents castling side for offensive superiority 

Ensuring you do not capture pieces which end up in opening files when castled to opposite sides  

 

Day 5-  Development Advantage  

Gambits 

Gambit dis advantage 

Gambit advantage 

Check for traps when capturing  

Sicilian and Caro Kann defense to King pawns opening  

Good move ,bad move , doubtful move, interesting move ,excellent move and blunder notations. 

Horizontal threats  

Decisive attacks , planning 2 moves at a time and checking the same for the opponent. 

 

Day 6 – Elimination of defense 

If your piece can easily be exchanged for eliminated then it is not a defending piece but a target 

Undermining ,  

Day 7 – Space advantage 

Identifying space advantage 

Understanding which side is space advantage and active players  

Example of how space disadvantage results in mate 

Demonstrate how exchanging pieces result in disadvantage for player having space advantage 

Outpost 

Using pawns exchange when you have space disadvanatge 

 

Day 8 : Positioning the pieces 

Discuss ideal squares for all pieces (eg. Outpost for knight)  

Puzzles on identifying the correct square for the pieces  

Importance of prioritizing the pieces to move to correct squares (eg. Prevent threat first and then move piece) 

Immobilizing enemy pieces 

Zugzwang 

Hindering enemy pieces  in end game and its importance  

Hindering enemy pieces in mid game for material advantage  

 

Day 9:  Weak Squares  

Describe 3 weaknesses  

Discussing outposts 

Example of Sveshnikov opening where outpost importance is visible 

Identifying weak square- puzzles  

Examples of weak squares being used by pieces other than knight 

How occupying weak squares is important in game play  

 

Day 10: Pawn Weakness  

Scottish opening example for understanding backward pawn attacks  

Identifying backward pawns and isolated pawns 

Stopping backward pawns 

Attacking backwards pawn – doubling rooks  

Chess enables critical and logical thinking, memory capacity and attention span. It is known to develop cognitive skills like pattern recognition, decision making, geometric thinking and problem solving. The students will be able to participate in chess competitions after attending these classes.

LOW ENROLMENTS AND CLASS CANCELLATION

We conduct small group classes and keep a very low minimum threshold (2 kids). If any section receives lower than minimum threshold then the section may be cancelled, and the learner is automatically moved to the next upcoming section.

Learning Goals

Students will improve their knowledge in chess and learn the advance moves in order to improve their game further. Students will be able to participate in chess competitions.
