Description

Class Experience

1. Before we start the combat trials the LearningWorks For Kids gamer guides will make it clear that today’s session is about focus. As we guide the students to the first trial we will talk about how focus is used in Minecraft and start to ask how they use to conquer the upcoming challenges ahead.

2. After completing the first archery challenge we will reflect back on how everyone did and talk about how keeping attention fully will end in a better result with more targets hit. The Gamer Guides will then guide the students to the monster arena and talk about how focusing on teamwork and each other will help them survive the arena. Then reflect back on that challenge as well.

3. Through out the session we will relate the focus your child is using in Minecraft with tasks they must overcome on a daily basis. For example, talking about how focusing on monsters and combat in Minecraft is not too different then focusing in class, and explaining why it is important to practice this skill for tasks in their life to come.

LearningWorks for Kids (LW4K) views gameplay as a foundation for children’s learning. LW4K LIVE classes leverage children's attention, persistence, and love of gaming as tools for developing executive functioning, social-emotional, and academic skills used in and out of game play. Our teachers are expert gamers, trained in psychology and education with the goal of making game-based learning into real world skills. But playing games is not enough! We apply evidenced-based strategic teaching principles and the LW4K model of “Detect, Reflect, and Connect” to make gameplay “Digitally Nutritious” and help students identify, think about, and then apply the skills they are practicing in gameplay to the real world.

While our classes are great fun, there is always a teaching component included. Typically we spend about 10 minutes at the beginning of class, talking, watching video, and strategizing about our targeted skill (e.g. Planning, Time Management, Organization, Flexibility, etc). The remainder of the glass is gameplay where we apply the “Detect, Reflect, and Connect” strategies to promote real world learning. Your kids will have a blast playing video games with our teachers and learn skills that will help them at home, school, and in their daily activities.
Our dedicated, experienced Learning Works for Kids instructors always make sure that every session is just as enjoyable as it is educational. This course will be led by a member of our LearningWorks LIVE team. For more information about our team, please visit the "About Us" page on the LearningWorks for Kids website.

Course Instructor: Michael Trumbauer.
Michael is an educator that has had a strong interest in gaming for his entire life. He recently graduated from Rutgers University with a bachelor’s degree in English and he is currently finishing a master’s degree in Education. He has experience in multiple educational settings including working with the Plainfield Public School District’s afterschool and summer programs, substitute teaching, teaching an SAT Prep Program through Rutgers, teaching ESL online to students in Korea, and completing his student teaching in a sixth grade classroom!

As someone with ADHD, Michael realized he was able to learn a great deal from playing video games when he was younger. Video games allowed him to work on skills in a fun way that he would normally have no interest in. He is currently playing Valorant, Pokemon, and Spider-man. Michael was excited to join the LW4K LIVE team to be able to combine his love for games into a way for students to learn!
