Class Experience

In this weekly social group, children are welcomed to come engage with their peers. We will work on social cues, initiating and maintaining conversation and making friends. This class affords children the opportunity to interact with their peers, share hobbies and interests, use their social skills, and make new friends. There will be rotating topics including favorite animals/pets (some of my pets usually make a cameo appearance,) favorite foods, hobbies, books or movies, and more. I also have a couple of fun getting-to-know you games that we can play. As a mother of a child with autism, I know how important this type of engagement can be. This is a welcoming and friendly environment which allows the children to feel comfortable. Children are welcome to submit topics or questions for future weeks.
Week 1 - Getting to know you
Week 2 - Your favorite things
Week 3 - Would you rather?
Week 4 - Interest and hobbies

While this group is open to all children, children with autism and anxiety may find the friendly, relaxing environment more conducive to participation. Once a child has verified their identity with me, they are welcomed to turn off their camera if they are more comfortable that way. While oral participation is encouraged, children are welcome to share their responses in the chat.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
As a mother of a 12 year old with autism, anxiety, sensory processing disorder, and OCD, I know the importance of understanding social cues and initiating conversations. I have taught at 2 different homeschool co-ops working with many different special needs children on varying functional levels. I have been homeschooling my son his entire educational career while working closely with therapists and specialists to ensure all of his needs are met.
