Students will need a copy of the book Peter Pan by J. M. Barrie. The assigned chapters must be read or listened to BEFORE class. Students can use their own books, library books, ebooks, or even listen to the audio books. If listening to the audiobooks, it is highly recommended that student reads independently to develop their own reading comprehension and competency.
In this book, there is a tribe called the Piccaninnies that are portrayed negatively, as are pirates. One of my core values is to teach children to think critically, and to apply that to everything they read. Racism or racial stereotypes are never acceptable to me, even in a fictional, magical world.
