Hi! My name is Jessica Wilson and I believe that learning should be an adventure. I live in Southern Utah with my four boys and our dog Boomerang. We love going hiking and exploring. One thing that we love to do is visit historical sites. I love to use the skills I’ve learned studying history, sociology, and education to learn about different cultures and stories from around the world!
My main topic is private 1:1 reading tutoring. I do offer math and writing tutoring as well. I also offer a variety of FLEX classes for a variety of ages. These options include Social Studies, research, cooking, and life skills classes.
I base my teaching in the Humanizing Pedagogy meaning I teach in a way that encourages students to use their agency to question and learn in a setting that promotes connection and community with a sense of belonging. I use a variety of tactics for this including reflection exercises and critical literacy. We will explore different viewpoints and make personal connections with the material. Part of making connections to the material includes creatively demonstrating what students have learned. This may be in any form that excites them including writing, drawing, Scratch, Lego stop motion videos and more.
I have a bachelor’s degree in University Studies with minors in History, Sociology and Spanish. I also have a Master of Interdisciplinary Studies with emphases in Online Teaching, Education and Library. I use a combination of what I have learned in my classes and through various positions in education, customer service and food service to create fun and engaging classes that foster creativity and connection.
