Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 6
This 4-session self paced course provides a deep dive into the musculoskeletal system. Each week will include a recorded lesson covering the topic in detail. There will be no live zoom meetings so all interaction will occur asynchronously in the classroom.

I assume that learners have no prior knowledge on the subject. I use models and a really neat vintage moving xray to demonstrate the concepts and students will create their own models, take notes, or draw out the topic on paper. I do provide a worksheet for each lesson if you prefer but you have options. My goal is that each student is able to use their own learning style to tackle the material--this can be with homemade manipulatives, models created in other ways, electronic modeling, taking notes on paper, or drawing. For the last lessom of class, I will lead learners in a chicken dissection using a regular roasting chicken from the grocery. (Students who aren't dissecting can observe and create drawings of their observations.)

Students and I will interact regularly in the classroom. Students will submit photographs of their work and answer 3 prompts per lesson (related to class material and a video on Youtube that extends the learning). The first question each lesson will be a guessing game in which students each describe a particular bone/joint/muscle (depending on the week's topic).
Learning Goals
Students will gain a basic understanding of the musculoskeletal system. More importantly, students will leave the class with an appreciation of the amazing function of their bodies and how they move.

Syllabus

4 Lessons
over 4 Weeks
Lesson 1:
Intro to Bones
What are bones, what are the different types of bones, and what do they do? During the recorded lesson, students will explore the different types of bones and their functions and create a summary.
Lesson 2:
Intro to Joints
What are joints, what are the different types of joints, and what do they do? During the recorded lesson, students will explore the different types of joints and their functions and create a summary. The lesson includes vintage footage of a moving xray (open source) together with a discussion of what we're seeing.
Lesson 3:
Intro to Muscles
What are muscles and what do they do? During the recorded lesson, students will explore the different types of muscles and how skeletal muscles work. Students will create a model or drawing of a joint with muscles.
Lesson 4:
Chicken Dissection
Why a chicken? What is similar and different between a chicken's anatomy and a human's anatomy? Students can do their own dissection or draw a diagram of what they see from my dissection. I use a regular roasting chicken that can be obtained from a grocery, market, or butcher. Students will post a photo of their dissection or drawing in the classroom and respond to a prompt based on the material.

Learning Needs
This format is ideal for a variety of learning needs and I'm happy to help adjust expectations or resources to work well for your learner.
Parental Guidance
This class includes an optional dissection. Please note that dissection involves cutting chicken tissue with sharp instruments. Those sharp instruments are just as capable of cutting your learner's fingers! Please only allow your learner to do any dissecting themselves if they are already competent with sharp instruments. I did the entire dissection with a good pair of sharp dissecting scissors. Even if your learner is quite capable, please observe them the entire time they are working with sharp instruments or raw meat and make sure they clean up properly afterwards to prevent injury or disease. Nothing in this class will be or is intended to be medical advice. This is merely educational in nature and will be a surface-level overview. Your student will not be coming out of this class knowing anything about how to diagnose or treat any conditions and we will not be discussing any personal medical questions/needs. Students should come with general questions about the topic.
Supply List
Please read through the class description for a more detailed explanation.
All learners will need paper or model making supplies for demonstrating bones and joints
If your learner will be creating the same model as I use for muscles, they will need three pieces of cardstock, scissors, tape, and balloon-animal balloons. But they can choose to make their model out of anything they want.

If your learner wants to complete a dissection (optional), then they will need a cooking chicken. The chicken might be frozen so plan ahead to have time to thaw if needed. Your student will also need dissection equipment such as a tray, sharp scissors, gloves, eye protection. I demonstrate using only dissection scissors. I do a fair amount of blunt dissection, which requires scissors with a fairly sharp tip. Please read through the parental guidance for safety warnings.
