Blends, Digraphs, and Word Families Oh My!

Average rating:4.8Number of reviews:(20)
Each class, a new word family (at, am, an etc) or a blend (l as in flag, clam, slide) or digraph (sh as in shed, ship etc) will be introduced, practiced, and repeated with approximately 6 words.

Class experience

Students will use knowledge of letters and sounds to increase beginning reading skills. Depending on learner level, an informal assessment will be completed and the teacher will determine where to begin with reading level and blending techniques (word family, more difficult words etc.). If a learner has just mastered letter sounds, a more basic approach may be taken and beginning reading with repetition to word family practice will be taught in the beginning.
I have been teaching special education for 10 years and will start my 11th year in a few weeks. I have worked with a variety of learners and have seen students make progress from the repetition of this approach. Students enjoy seeing the words and picture association, reading the words in a poem, seeing them in a story, spelling them with tiles, manipulating them with paper letter tiles, and do not realize that while the practice may seem repetitive, they are able to identify those words again and again after practicing them so much.
Worksheets will be uploaded to print and practice. There is a sheet that can be printed with letter tiles to cut out and manipulate to spell the words and also a cut/paste activity. The lesson can taught for multiple days.
There are many more weeks of instruction to cover all word families, blends and digraphs. There are 20 word families, and about 15 lessons for beginning or ending blends or digraphs to discuss. I created the class with 10 lessons with the idea to introduce 5 word families, and 5 blends and digraphs (mix). in those 10 lessons. I will create another class to continue with more word families and more blends and digraphs.
