Beginning Drawing: Learn the Art Elements While Drawing Animals and Nature

In this course students will learn about different art elements while making a scenic painting of either nature or animals. We will make trees, bugs, animals, and landscapes. They will learn about line, shape, space, color, and perspective.

Class Experience

US Grade Kindergarten - 3
Each week students will learn about a foundational element of art and complete an animal or landscape. Students will learn to be more observant and will l  earn how to recognize the basic art elements like shape and color in art pictures and in physical objects while making a creative and interesting pictures. Students will learn basic drawing and coloring skills. They will learn to use their skills and think creatively to make fun pictures of animals, bugs or nature that they can be proud of. Students can join at any time and do not need to have completed the previous weeks lesson.

1.  Line in Landscape
 Students will learn about different kinds of lines and how lines are use to make all kinds of art. Students will learn that a line is a dot moving in space.  Students will draw many different types of lines on their page while making a nice landscape scene. They will use different lines to seperate the sections from one another. There will be different kind of lines for the grass, trees, water, mountains, etc. They will learn how to show different emotions and expressions in their lines. Students will complete a drawing with many different kinds of lines and colors. Students will use a black marker or sharpie in addition to the regular drawing supplies. 

2. Geometric and Organic shapes in Bugs or Animals.
 Students will learn about the different kinds of shapes and how to make them. They will learn the difference between geometric and organic shapes. Students will draw a simple bug and then we will fill it in with geometric shapes.  Students will learn to easily distinguish between geometric and organic shapes. This project allows to students to use their own imagination and gain confidence in making their own picture over an entire page. 

3. Making some Bugs while learning about Positive and Negative Space.
Students will learn that space is the area around objects. They will learn that there is positive and negative areas to any piece of art. Students will learn how to recognize the positive space from the negative space. They will draw some simple shapes to make an animal or a small picture and will cut it out and glue it to another piece of paper. This will make a bold picture and will reinforce positive and negative space. Students will need paper, construction paper (one piece of black or your choice of color), scissors, glue stick, a pencil, and an eraser. 
             
4.   Perspective through Space
 Students will learn about perspective and will do a one point perspective project. Students will draw a railroad going back into the distance with trees on one side to show perspective. Students will learn about a vanishing point and horizon. Students will learn to recognize places in every day life where people can see one point perspective. 

5. Warm and Cool Leaves
 Students will learn the difference between warm colors and cool colors.  Students will draw leaves in warm colors and the back ground will be in cool colors. Students will learn how to use balance in colors and how to group colors in the color wheel.

Parental Guidance
The third lesson week of September 26-30 uses scissors and glue sticks.
