Class Experience

In this 6 week course, students will continue learning to play the piano in a fun and encouraging setting. We will be using the Alfred Prep Course for the Young Beginner - Level D, and will be playing from the lesson book as well as the solo book. We will expect to cover about the first half of each book, although pacing of the class may be adjusted as necessary. We will also use the Faber Playtime Piano Classics book - level 1. Students should have completed the "Beginner Piano Class for Ages 5-8 - Part 7" OR have completed the Alfred Prep Course books A, B, C, OR a similar piano method. If you are unsure of your child's level/readiness for this class, I will be happy to schedule an individual lesson to make an assessment.

Week One:
We will review 8th note counting and talk about subdividing the beat. We will learn about 8th rests and play songs in G Position.

Week Two:
We will learn about a new G Position (left hand one octave higher) and play several songs in this position.

Week Three:
We will learn about shifting hand positions within a song and the 8va (octave higher and octave lower) markings in music.

Week Four:
We will learn about tempo markings and practice shifting hand positions.

Week Five:
We will learn about the damper pedal and continue to practice songs with shifting hand positions

Week Six:
We will learn about measuring half steps and whole steps in music. We will review flats, sharps, and naturals.

Learning Goals

Students will learn to play with correct technique, learn to read music on the staff, and learn to play songs of increasing difficulty.

Hello! I am so excited to teach piano classes on Outschool! I have been playing piano most of my life and I really love teaching beginners. It is so important to learn the fundamentals like correct hand position, posture, and note reading from the very beginning, and these are some of the things that I really focus on in class. I have taught many students of all ages how to play the piano. I have also taught high school and jr. high school choir and jr. high school band in the San Antonio, Texas area. I have been an accompanist for many groups, including The Children's Chorus of San Antonio, and I served as a member of the Fifth United States Army Band at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. I look forward to working with your child!
