This class will be a mixture of personal practice on your own, play-alongs with me during class, and discussions. We will also be listening to a lot of recordings so that you are able to hear how the flute functions as a solo instrument and within an ensemble. We will also have challenges and games in order to test our knowledge throughout the course. A student should of course have a flute for this course, and I will be happy to give advice on what instrument to buy. There will also be a few books that should be purchased for the course but many things will be available online for free. By the end of this course, I want each student to have the basic knowledge on playing the flute and be able to perform at a certain level of proficiency. Weekly Topics Week of 10/16: Flute Basics (Brands, Cleaning the Flute, and Flute Positions) Week of 10/23: Flute Sound (Tone and Air) Week of 10/30: Learning The Basics (Notes and Rhythms) Week of 11/6: Learning The Basics (Notes and Rhythms) Pt. 2
