Looking for an online ballet class for your child who has advanced beyond introductory level class, but isn't quite ready for intermediate? Welcome to Ballet 1.5 (beginner-intermediate ballet)!

This dance class is for children who love ballet and feel that they have moved beyond introduction-level ballet classes and are ready to take dance a bit more seriously (but don't worry, we will still have lots of fun!). In this class we will focus on proper ballet technique, ballet terminology, strengthening our muscles, and increasing flexibility. Each week we will practice a variety of ballet steps, some basic and some more complex based on the the group. Students are welcome to take this class in conjunction with my Beginner Ballet Class or my Intermediate Ballet Class or as a stand-alone weekly class.

Worried that this ballet class isn't a good fit for your ballet dancer? Don't be--try it out! We've had students from all stages of ballet give class a try.

Students will be introduced to ballet movements, steps, and combinations and will receive feedback/guidance for improvement. We mainly use the Vaganova style of ballet in class, but will occassionally reference the Cecchetti ballet style. We will use music from various classical ballets including "The Nutcracker", "Swan Lake", "The Sleeping Beauty", "Giselle", "Peter and the Wolf", "Coppélia", "Carnival of the Animals", "Romeo and Juliet", "Don Quixote", "Cinderella", and more!

Class structure:
(5 minutes) Question of the Day: Each child will have the opportunity to answer a fun question
(5 minutes) Ballet stretches
(15 minutes) Combinations/Barre (a portable ballet barre is required, please check the "class materials" section)
(5 minutes) Ballet Game: Ballet Simon Says, Ballet Freeze Dance, etc.
(10 minutes) Center work/steps "across the floor" (ex: balancé, turns, bourres, etc.)
(5 minutes) Closing Question, "What was your favorite part of today's class?"

Materials:
For Beginner-Intermediate Ballet, students will need a portable ballet barre OR a homemade version. The barre cannot be attached to the wall (for our purposes). I will share links and photos below in the materials section.

Optional Attire for beginner-intermediate ballet:
-Ballet Leotard and tights or a well-fitting t-shirt with leggings, shorts, or well-fitting sweatpants
-Long hair pulled back into a bun
-Well-fitting ballet slippers

Classroom Page: I reccomend looking at the post on the classroom page 5-10 minutes before the start of class. I will post the "question of the day" before each class and your child can prepare their answer before joining to relieve any anxiety. Always take a peek at the classroom page a few minutes after class, as well. I often post tips, ballet videos, links to music used in class, and optional ballet "homework".

For your child to be ready for this Ballet 1.5 (beginner-intermediate ballet) class they should be familiar with and able to demonstrate several to most of the following:
-plié
-tendu
-first and second position with feet
-preparation (en bas), first, second, and fifth position with arms
-relevé
-bourrée
-passé
-pas de bourrée
-proper ballet posture with minimal guidance
-proper ballet technique including pointing toes
-proper ballet class etiquette
Learning Goals
-Improve their understanding of basic ballet stretches, as well as improve their flexibility
-Learn about and demonstrate "proper ballet technique" (ex: tall posture, working stomach muscles, pointed toes, no "sickling" of feet, etc.)

Learning Needs
I am a Neurodivergent, Certified General and Special Education Teacher. This ballet class is built for students who are neurotypical and neurodiverse. I incorporate both visual and verbal instructions with optional modifications.
Parental Guidance
Be sure that beginner-intermediate ballet students are head-to-toes on camera when standing. Students should have water, room to move, comfortable clothing, and appropriate footwear. Ballet students can wear ballet slippers, sneakers, socks, or bare feet. Parents may want to remain close by during ballet class to encourage attention and help with any technology issues that might arise. If any technological issues arise during class (ex: teacher is inaudible), parents can send me a message in the chat on Zoom and I will do my best to resolve the issue. This beginner-intermediate ballet class is great for students who are neurotypical, neurodiverse, have Autism, ADHD, speech impairments, dyslexia, Down Syndrome, and many other disability classifications. If a family has any special needs, comments, or concerns before or after class they can feel free to send me a private message on Outschool and I will do my best to accommodate to your satisfaction within 48 hours. If this class is too challenging after the first session, your child is welcome to continue if they feel comfortable or they can try out my Ballet 1 class (Beginner Ballet) for a few sessions to gain skills and confidence. Intermediate Ballet: https://outschool.com/classes/b155499f-c199-40de-b74d-f45591106a59?sectionUid=38711d86-dca0-4edb-ba44-2517ff4b1c34 Some students take this class for a few years before "moving up" to the next level, other students are ready after a couple of months--each child is different. Feel free to send me a private message to ask about your child's progress in class or you can evaluate by asking yourself these questions: -Is my child having fun in class? -Does my child have the names of most of the basic steps memorized? Ex: Plié, tendu, echappé, passé, pas de bourré, pas de chat, balancé, etc. -Does my child follow along during class with little or no prompting? -Does my child stand with tall posture (shoulders down, hips forward) during the majority of class? -Is my child able to take feedback and apply it to their dancing? Ex: If the teacher says "flag your feet" or "turn out your legs" -Can my child balance on relevé (tippy toes) for 20-30 seconds at a time and on one foot for 20-30 seconds at a time? -Can my child coordinate some of the more complicated steps? Ex: ballet walks, pas de bourré, pas de chat, etc. -Does my child have these basic positions memorized: first, second, third, fourth? -Would my child be able to maintain focus for a longer class? Next class: Ballet 2 (Intermediate Ballet): https://outschool.com/classes/b155499f-c199-40de-b74d-f45591106a59?sectionUid=38711d86-dca0-4edb-ba44-2517ff4b1c34
