Class Experience

Beginner Level
Welcome to our ballet class! In this dance class students will be introduced to the fundamentals of ballet including positions, basic ballet steps, jumps, and terminology.

*This is an ongoing ballet class, if you are looking to only take one session simply unsubscribe after the class OR send me a message for assistance and I will be happy to help.*

Please read our entire class description: This short, fast-paced online dance class is great for children who are interested in ballet but you are unsure if it will "stick", students with special needs, and students who may benefit from the benefits of ballet such as posture, coordination, focus, discipline, and exercise. No activities will be particularly feminized, so this ballet class is great for both boys and girls.

Students will be introduced to ballet movements, steps, and combinations and will receive feedback/guidance for improvement. We mainly use the Vaganova style of ballet in class, but will occassionally reference the Cecchetti style. We will use music from various classical ballets including "The Nutcracker", "Swan Lake", "The Sleeping Beauty", "Giselle", "Peter and the Wolf", "Coppélia", "Carnival of the Animals", "Romeo and Juliet", "Don Quixote", "Cinderella", and more!

Each class will include:
- A "Question of the Day" (A simple silly question that each child can answer at the start of class. Ex: Would you rather play in sand or snow? They are welcome to answer verbally or students who need are welcome to answer via classroom chat. The "QOD" is always shared on the classroom page before the start of class.)
- Stretches (learn the basic ballet stretches)
- Learn/practice basic positions (6th, 1st, 2nd)/pre-barre
- Ballet Jumps
-Ballet Freeze Dance
- "Across the floor" activities (ballet walks, leaps, skips, bourrees, etc.)
-Closing Question: "What was your favorite part of today's ballet class?"

Families, often new students (to ballet or online classes) will take a few sessions to simply sit and observe. Depending on the child this may last for 1 session or 10 sessions until the student feels comfortable and confident enough to participate in ballet class. I try to allow students to take their time to warm up and quietly encourage them when they begin to engage more in class.

There is no formal dress-code for this class, but students should wear comfortable clothing. Example clothing:
-sweatpants and a t-shirt
-leggings and a tank-top
-leotard and tights
-stretchy dress with tights

Students may wear the following footwear:
-sneakers
-bare feet
-socks
-ballet slippers

Students must have a few feet in each direction to move and should have their device angled so that they will be visible while dancing.

This class will be positive and growth-focused! Students will only be expected to try their best and to have fun!!! Think more casual and less serious in tone :)

Classroom Page: Look at the post on the classroom page 5-10 minutes before the start of ballet class. I will post the "question of the day" before each class and your child can prepare their answer with you before joining to relieve any anxiety. Always take a peek at the classroom page a few minutes after class, as well. I often post tips, ballet videos, links to music used in class, or optional at-home extension ideas.

PS-- 2-year-olds welcome! 2s often take a bit longer to start to participate in ballet class. Some parents choose to sit off camera showing their child what to do and encouraging them to try the dance moves. I try to be extra patient with younger kiddos :)

If your child is 5-6 I recommend this ballet class if they have not yet developed the focus to remain attentive to one activity for more than a few minutes or if your child is working on developing their gross-motor skills (marching, skipping, etc.). If your child is able to remain attentive to an activity with little adult guidance, I recommend my ballet class for ages 5-9: https://outschool.com/classes/ballet-class-beginner-ballet-for-lower-elementary-boys-girls-QIjt1cGw

This ballet class is great for students who are neurotypical, neurodiverse, have Autism, ADHD, speech impairments, dyslexia, Down Syndrome, and many other disability classifications. Families, often new students (to ballet or online classes) will take a few sessions to simply sit and observe. Depending on the child this may last for 1 session or 10 sessions until the student feels comfortable and confident enough to participate. I try to allow students to take their time to warm up and quietly encourage them when they begin to engage more in class. Some students take this class for a few years before "moving up" to the next level, other students are ready after a few weeks--each child is different. Feel free to send me a private message to ask about your child's progress in class or you can evaluate by asking yourself these questions: -Is my child having fun in class? -Does my child have the names of some of the basic steps memorized? -Does my child follow along during class with little or no prompting? -Does my child step "toe, heel" during ballet walks? -Can my child coordinate skipping and galloping? -Would my child be able to maintain focus for a longer class?
