Ahoy, Matey! Join me, Teacher Karen, as we explore R-controlled vowels in this pirate themed reading course! During this five-week course, learners will focus on building their reading and phonics skills as they work on learning the R-controlled vowels ar, er, ir, or, and ur. Knowing how to sound out irregular vowel combinations is an important part of learning to read. An R-controlled vowel is any vowel followed by an “R.” The “R” changes the sound the vowel makes. R-controlled vowels are often called the “Bossy R” because the “R” takes over and makes the vowel make a new sound. Just like greedy, ruthless pirates! Arrr! Each week we will set sail on the high seas to learn a new R-controlled vowel. Classes will begin with a pirate sing-along. Next, learners will be introduced to the R-controlled vowel of the week with the help from Polly, our pirate parrot friend. She will guide learners as they learn to read vocabulary words containing the target R-controlled vowel. I will provide learners with a chance to review the previous week's R-controlled vowel at the beginning of classes too. Then, we will play a fun treasure map board game together where learners will practice further. Finally learners will complete a printable worksheet that incorporates the vocabulary words with the R-controlled vowel learned that day in class. This is a great chance for learners to work on their writing and fine motor skills. Worksheets will be uploaded weekly to the Outschool classroom page at least 24 hours before each class starts. Learners are welcome to dress up in a pirate costume for classes! Here is the class schedule indicating weekly R-controlled vowel topics with example vocabulary words that learners will learn: Week 1 -- “ar” (car, star) Week 2 -- “er (tiger, paper) Week 3 -- “ir” (shirt, bird) Week 4 -- “or” (corn, fork) Week 5 -- “ur” (fur, turn) Please note: Learners will need to have basic reading skills in order to be successful in this class. They should at least know all of their letter names and sounds and be starting to learn to read. This class will incorporate many visual aids to help learners with word recognition. I hope to see your learner in my classroom soon. Happy learning! :)

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello, I'm Teacher Karen! Welcome to my learning space at Outschool. I am so excited about teaching your child!
I live in Ontario, Canada with my husband, one-year-old son, and two dogs. I have an Honors Bachelor of Arts Degree in Child and Youth Studies from Brock University. I am a certified Educational Assistant to help students with special needs in school classrooms. I also have TESOL certification. My passion is teaching reading and phonics to young learners.
I have been teaching for over 15 years in private education. As a stay-at-home Mom, I currently teach part-time on Outschool. I am an experienced online teacher having taught English as a Second Language (ESL) for five years online to students in Asia. I also spent one year living abroad teaching English in South Korea. Furthermore, I was the head teacher of an early reading program for preschoolers for several years. At this learning center I also tutored elementary students afterschool in reading, language arts, and math. I've tutored privately for families and worked as an au pair nanny, daycare assistant, and volunteered for numerous children community outreach programs over the years. I have also worked with children who have reading disabilities like dyslexia and other learning challenges.
I love helping my students to learn, grow, and shine! My classroom is a fun and interactive place. I strongly believe a child’s learning environment needs to be positive and engaging for success. I strive to make my classroom welcoming to all my learners offering them excitement, fun, and praise as they learn to read. I am a patient, kind, and encouraging teacher. My teaching methods are dynamic --reaching all students and their unique learning styles and needs. I like to incorporate phonic skills, vocabulary, games, stories, and printable worksheet activities in my classes. I keep my class sizes small so learners stay engaged and can interact more with me and their classmates.
When I am not teaching, I spend my free-time with my family and friends. I enjoy doing outdoor activities like walking, camping, and going to our family’s cottage by the lake. I also like to cook, make arts & crafts, take photos, and travel.
Thank you for stopping by and I hope to see your learner in my classroom soon. Happy learning! :)
