Class Experience

Animate sprites with pixel art to create dynamic visuals for your game or short film! Zelda, Mario, and even Minecraft rely on pixel art animation. It is a game maker art foundation. In this course, we will look at basic sprite creation. Then we will learn how to use those sprite sheets in Scratch or other editors to give life to our creations.
Class one: navigating sprite making software to create a simple walk cycle. I will be using aseprite but there are free versions of sprite editors for pc or mobile listed below.
Class two: using tile maps to create beautiful backdrops and scenes. Tile maps use pixel art to fill scenes with props and textures.
Class three: animating our assets in Scratch. We will create motion animations and then assign those to arrow key presses.
Class four: coding sprite interactions. We will develop our projects further by introducing game logic (or story elements).
This class is a “learn with me” style class where I demonstrate skills, then I help students problem solve using those skills, then I assign homework where they can practice independently.
I have seen beautiful work from young people as they learn sprite animation. This course is designed to encourage the art and creativity side of game design.
Learning Goals
Students will:
1) Build skills for creating unique sprite visuals
2) Learn the scene making process in digital art

Supply List
You will need one of the above sprite editors for class. I use aseprite and pixel studio but piskel is a good free option.
You should have a scratch account, which is free online. This allows me to see your finished products and provide feedback and encouragement.
If you want to make a game or story in another Editor, let me know. I will try to research to provide useful directions outside of scratch.

I’m Cody Creed.
I have been a teacher for 15 years in Winnipeg, Manitoba. I have a passion for STEAM education. That is the combination of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math.
For my classes, these ideas come together in maker skills, art, and coding. I’m proficient in easy to learn, low barrier graphic coding but I’m also comfortable with some other code languages.
Beyond teaching, I make robots and perform as a puppeteer. These projects have to go beyond code and engineering. They need to have personality.
