Homework
1 hour per week. Some building procedures and art tasks are time intensive and will be assigned for homework.
Assessment
The process will be assessed based on the following criteria: Inventory, (existing skills and resources) Prototyping, (solving mechanical and code challenges theoretically) Hardware mechanics, (the build process) Software Coding, (functional graphic coding) and Artistic skills. (Aesthetic finishing of a product) is These are the foundations of the engineering design process.

Class Experience

Code is a varied and complex process. It requires new languages and skills. This class is focussed on the Engineering Design Process to combine software and hardware to create something all your own. This class uses the 1-1 format to assess a student’s skills, interests, and resources to set a project goal. Classes then convert to the process of hardware engineering, code building and refining, and artistic finishing to create unique projects.
Class 1: Inventory: assessing the skills, interests and resources to make a build plan.
Class 2: prototyping 101: Schematic building to plan for hardware, software, and artistry of the project
Class 3: Hardware: This class is for the manual building of the electronics/mechanics involved in the project. If the project is game design focussed, hardware is replaced with game mechanics.
Class 4: Software building: Code is written for the project using a preferred software option.
Class 5: Artistic finishing: Design choices like robot shells, pop culture detailing, and colour decals are introduced to bring the project to its final form.
Ongoing: Upon project completion, we return to the class 1 inventory to plan a new project or students have the option to cease the subscription.
Learning Goals
Students will learn the engineering design process while pursuing a personally developed goal.
The finished project will be a well-engineered, polished prototype,
learning goal

Other Details

Parental Guidance
Projects might require hand tools and hot glue. Safety will be my first priority. Some engineering requires toy hacking, which can be discussed in the inventory stage.
Supply List
Learner supplies can be developed based on initial goals. If parts need to be ordered, the order of building might be adjusted or expanded to accommodate delivery times.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

I’m Cody Creed.
I have been a teacher for 15 years in Winnipeg, Manitoba. I have a passion for STEAM education. That is the combination of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math.
For my classes, these ideas come together in maker skills, art, and coding. I’m proficient in easy to learn, low barrier graphic coding but I’m also comfortable with some other code languages.
Beyond teaching, I make robots and perform as a puppeteer. These projects have to go beyond code and engineering. They need to have personality.
