16 in-class hoursClass Experience
This is the first half of a year of Grade 2 Math, lasting 12 weeks. It contains all the major math topics a second grader needs. This class will meet twice a week during a period of three months. In the first class I will have everyone introduce themselves, then I will tell everyone how the class will operate and what my expectations are. There is homework assigned after every class. It should take about 30 minutes to complete. There is also a test every few weeks. It is open-book so as long as the student has paid attention, took notes, and participated in class it should be low stress. Homework and tests will be posted on the Outschool classroom area. Please post completed homework and tests in the Teacher link where conversations are private between Student and Teacher. I will mark and return homework and tests with feedback in the Teacher messaging area. Please message me in the Teacher link with any questions about homework between classes. I will also ask at the beginning of each class if anyone had any homework problems they want to clarify. For the first week I will start with reinforcing students' basic addition facts. The 2nd week we will learn about two digit numbers place value. In week 3 we go into subtraction facts. Week 4 will be about time and calendar. Week 5 goes into two digit numbers addition. In week 6 we will review what we have learned so far and then a open book test. In weeks 7, we will get into customary measurement. We will do two digits numbers subtraction in Week 8. Week 9 will be about three digit numbers place value. Week 10 is about money. Week 11 will be learning about three digit numbers addition. Then we end the first half with a review of weeks 7 to 11 and a test. My teaching style is a positive form of "I teach, perform guided practice, and enable independent practice." I encourage questions from students. I go through example math problems via slides in a step by step manner, providing explanations as needed. Then I will ask students to demonstrate their knowledge by having them answer a problem, providing guiding questions to push them forward. With repetition, students will grasp the concept. I check for understanding in a constructive manner. I go around the room, asking each student to answer a problem and to provide explanations for their solution. This helps them develop their critical thinking skills.
