My hope is that if your child does not already have a journal and writing practice that they get a fun introduction to journaling. I recommend having an available notebook for the learner to easily access when they feel called to journal.

Class Experience

In this class, we will explore and share our own experiences while creating a safe environment for others to do so as well. We will be using a deck of conversation creator cards from Big Life Journal that cover topics from hobbies, dreams, fun facts, family, etc. Some of the questions include: What is your biggest dream? What is one quality that you love about yourself? What have you improved most recently? What is something that always makes you laugh?

I will use a document camera so students can see all the cards and choose their own questions. Once a student picks a question, they will be prompted to answer and other students are able to add to the conversation and offer their experience too. Every student will have a chance to pick and answer a question and we will take turns, as time permits. The intention is to create curious conversation and allow the student to practice speaking about themselves and their experiences. And remember some fun ones too!

For the last 10 minutes of class, we will pick one card and use that question as a journal prompt. Students are encouraged to bring a notebook/journal for this exercise. We will free-write with our individual questions and allow ourselves to explore with no instruction. Students are welcome to share any insights at the end of our writing time.

Teacher expertise and credentials
As a Lifeskills Coach, I teach and mentor both online and in person. The deck of question cards I will be using from Big Life Journal are cards that I use in my live classes as an icebreaker. I have seen the conversation that flow from these cards as seamless and comfortable even for people just meeting briefly.

As someone who values communication highly, I love facilitating conversations and an opportunity to dig deeper. Journaling is a practice that has allowed me to express myself , hear my own thoughts and is a part of my everyday routine. My intention here is to encourage young people to rely on these tools among others!
