US Grade Kindergarten - 4
Our initial meeting will include a short assessment to gauge students knowledge in reading in accuracy, fluency and comprehension. A structure for ongoing instruction will be set for your student based on the information gathered during this assessment. Each meeting, we will learn and review phonics rules, decoding strategies, practice words in isolation and then in text, practice fluency (including stress, intonation, expression, appropriate pausing and rate), and have discussion around the text to build comprehension. A sample lesson might include: -Spiral review of past phonics lessons taught -Phonics rules- /oi/ /oy/ -Reading words in isolation to practice skill- void, join, coin, deploy, enjoy -Read text at instructional level with support, practicing decoding strategies when solving an unknown word -Comprehension discussion to deepen understanding of the text read. This includes making inferences, and building understanding of the author's purpose, message or lesson. After each meeting, I post notes for at-home practice that includes sight words, phonics rules or a practice story or article. These will be reviewed at the next meeting.
Learning Goals
Goals will be individualized for each student and added to class notes for parents to know what we are currently working towards.
