When kids are engaged and having fun, they are learning without even knowing it! 

Learners will be creating a set of flash cards during each class so they can continue practicing the words after class ends. I will  post a link to the Kahoot slides and questions in our Outschool classroom so learners can continue to practice with the words after class ends! 

After completing 20 weeks of this course, learners will have a collection of the 200 "must know" words for 5th grade and will be ready to move on to our Word Masters class for continued challenging vocabulary instruction and support. 

My effective teaching method employs the use of TEN learning modalities when teaching the new words. Learners will:
👀 look at each word and identify spelling patterns
💬 read each word aloud
🔠 spell each word
✍ write each new word (on an index card to make a set of flashcards)
🔨 break some words down into prefixes, suffixes, root words, and syllables 
📚 identify synonyms and antonyms of each word; homophones; and compound words
🎯 make connections to the words and themselves and their experiences
👓 identify critical attributes of each word; discuss multiple meanings and parts of speech
📝 make up sentences using the words
👁 look at a visual representation of the word as used in a sentence  
          

Here is the focus for each week:
Week 1: Synonyms: veto, variable, novice, receptacle, generally, blunder
Week 2: Synonyms: brutal, blissful, daunting, treacherous, cumbersome, bewildered, bountiful
Week 3: Antonyms: criticism, compliment, unique, ordinary, flimsy, substantial
Week 4: Antonyms: frisky, sluggish, permanent, unstable, ridiculous, sensible
Week 5: Compound Words: earthquake, blueprint, whirlpool, headquarters, masterpiece, windshield
Week 6: Homophones
Week 7: Homographs
Week 8: Eponyms
Week 9: Fry's Instant Sight and Spelling Words
Week 10: Clips
Week 11: Blends
Week 12: Collective Nouns
Week 13: Latin Roots ped, numer, liber 
Week 14: Latin Roots clar, dict
Week 15: Greek Word Parts mech, meter, path
Week 16: Fry's Instant Sight and Spelling Words
Week 17: Prefixes retro-, ir-, mal-, inter-, ab-
Week 18: Prefixes bi-, com-, il-, hydro-,mono-
Week 19: Suffixes -ist, -ic, -ation/-tion, -ism, -ent
Week 20: Fry's Instant Sight and Spelling Words

After week 20, the class will repeat and begin again at week 1! So you can jump in any week and continue until you finish all 20 weeks!

**Learners will need to be able to open a 2nd tab on their computer to access the game OR they can use a second device such as a phone or tablet.
