In this 4-week class learners will dive into The Giver, exploring its thought-provoking themes, moral dilemmas, and dystopian world. We'll have guided discussions and look at everyting from characters to questions around individual freedom.

Assignments
1-2 hours per week. The students will be responsible for reading a portion of The Giver each week so that they are ready for discussions.
Certificate of Completion
Students will receive a Certificate of Completion to recognize their active participation in the 4-week book club. This certificate highlights their engagement in discussions, analysis of key themes, and successful completion of the reading and discussion.

Class Experience

US Grade 8 - 10
Intermediate - Advanced Level
In this 4-week book club, we’ll explore The Giver through guided discussions, interactive activities, and analysis of key themes. Each week, students will come prepared having read the assigned chapters, and we’ll engage in meaningful conversations about the story, characters, and deeper messages.

Course Includes: 
Weekly Book Discussions – Students will analyze character development, symbolism, and key plot points.
Organizers & Note-Taking Tools – Learners will receive graphic organizers to help track important themes and concepts.
Interactive Elements – Activities may include reviewing key moments, debating moral dilemmas, creative responses to the text, and online activities. 

This class is designed to help students improve their reading comprehension, recognize literary techniques, and feel confident discussing literature in a supportive environment. As an experienced educator, I ensure that all learners—regardless of reading level—can engage and share their ideas comfortably.

Learning Goals

Students will analyze and interpret key themes such as individuality, and control, within the context of a dystopian society.
Students will practice critical thinking skills through discussions of cause and effect and ethical dilemas that arise in the story.

Lesson 1:
Introduction & Chapter 1 - 5
 We'll start with an overivew of The Giver, class expectations, and discussion guidelines. We'll discuss the community's structure and rules, and beginn an analsysis of Jonas's character and our intial perceptions of him. We'll also begin to explore the themes of conformity of control. Chapters 1 - 5 need to read before class.

Lesson 2:
Review of Chapters 6 - 11
 We'll discuss the Ceremony of Twelve and it's signifigance for the members of the community. We'll discuss Jonas's assignemnt and it's implications. We're going to talk about the importance of The Giver and what happens when Jonas first starts his training. Learners will read chapters 6 - 11 before the class.

Lesson 3:
Review and Discussion of Chapters 12 -17
 This week we'll look at the impact of the memories on Jonas. We'll discuss emotions, color and choice and why they are signifigant to Jonas and the story. As a group we'll discuss how Jonas's relationship with others in the community is changing.

Discuss and Review Chapters 18 - 23
 In our final class we'll discuss the climax and resoluation of the book. We'll look at overall themes and messages of the novel and what could possibly come next.

Other Details

Learning Needs
As a former special education teacher who specialized in supporting older students who struggled with reading comprehension, this class will be able to meet the needs of most students. There will be optional supplemental material to help.
Parental Guidance
This book is equivalent to 12+, or PG. Common Sense Media rates it for 11+.
Pre-Requisites
Students should be able to read independently or with the support of guided worksheets.
Supply List
The Giver should be available from your local library. Students can use a physical copy of the book or an online copy through Libby.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Sources
We will be reading The Giver written by Lois Lowry. Learners are required to have their own copy. They can get it from the library or purchase it.

I have had training in teaching ELA and reading, and focus on ensuring that students are reading beyond just what is written on the page.
