In this class, your child will be practicing their English skills centered around a specific goal. Perhaps a teacher has raised an area of concern and you would like your child to practise more. I will be providing the texts so that children and I can work together. Comprehension questions and tips on how to improve reading, reading aloud and answering exam type questions are also skills that can be addressed depending on the focus requested by the parent. 

Your child will receive an individualized lesson. I am a very experienced teacher and good at what I do so can adapt to what your child needs. Writing is an essential skill in their academic toolkit and helps with all areas of the curriculum and their daily life. 

Note: If a learner is more than 10 minutes late, it will be considered a missed class as per Outschool policy and the class is not eligible for a refund. If your leaner needs to cancel class, I can reschedule for a make-up meeting.

If the cancellation is more than 24 hours in advance, I can also issue a refund. In general, students are allowed to cancel / reschedule 1 lesson every 8 weeks (with 24 hours notice). Exceptions may be made in an emergency. If I, as your learner's teacher has a scheduling conflict, I will either contact you to reschedule for a different time or if a time doesn't work for you, issue a refund. I respect your time and the learner's scheduled time either side and this helps lessons to run smoothly. This also gives me an opportunity to teach a student who may be on a waiting list or would like this time slot and they will need notice to arrange their time.

Lessons will be focused around texts that are differentiated for the individual learner. 

I will be:
- Developing goals for every reader. 
- High frequency words / vocabulary appropriate for your learner's age.
- Implementing step-by-step strategies for skilled reading during lesson time.
- Guiding readers through different levels of reading texts and a variety of texts from fiction to non-fiction.
- Vocabulary explanation and application.
- Comprehension skills support - inference, technical, author's intent and retrieval question exploration. 
- Supporting automaticity - in this case means being able to read or produce language without having to focus on individual words or grammar rules.
- Encouraging, scaffolding and modeling prosody.
- Fun reading books with lots of variety to suit your learner's needs and preferences. 

Prosody refers to the rhythm, intonation, and stress patterns of language, which convey information about the speaker's attitude, emotion, and emphasis.

Focusing on developing automaticity and prosody in language learning can help learners become more fluent and effective communicators. It helps them process and produce language more quickly and accurately, and convey meaning effectively.

This is a great class for general improvement but also for children who excel at reading or those children who feel that they are not progressing at fast as their peer groups and are losing interest in reading.
