History Herald: The Story of France - Events and Players of French History

In this 14 week course, students will explore the history of France as we travel through time investigating the people and events that shaped the land of the French. 

Through engaging presentation and interactive discussion, students will work through French history and explore the beautiful and rich history of a beautiful people. This is a beginner class, so no prior knowledge is needed.

2.      800: Charlemagne Becomes Holy Roman Emperor
3.      843: Signing of the Treaty of Verdun
4.      1180-1223: Reign of Philip II
5.      1337-1453: The 100 Years War
6.      1461-1483: The Reign of Louis XI
7.      1562-1598: The French Wars of Religion
8.      1661 Centralisation of Power in France by Louis XIV
9.      1789: The French Revolution
10.     1802-1815: The Napoleonic Wars
11.     1848-1870: Second Republic and Second Empire
12.     1871-1914: The Belle Epoque
13.     1940-1944: The Vichy Regime
14.     1959: Declaration of the Fifth Republic & 1968: Riots of May ’68


The history of France is a an intricate tapestry of themes, events, and players that changed and molded the story of a country. Each week we look briefly into these major events to see how France as we know it came to be. Through interactive discussion and group collaboration, students will take a historical adventure through one of the most glorious histories of Europe.

Students do not need prior knowledge as this is a beginner class. Readings will be given for each week that will give students an overview of the class (Each week will roughly be 10 pages). Students will also be given a notes organizer to help facilitate learning while reading and in class.
