We are going to become science detectives and try to answer the following perplexing questions about the octopus:  
Are legends of The Kraken true?
If there are so many legends about the Kraken, do colossal squid really exist?
Are stories about octopus being successful escape artists from aquariums true?
Can an octopus tell if a volcano eruption is going to happen?

In this course the instructor will:
Guide students through critical thinking exercises in an attempt to separate fact from legend about squid and octopus.
Ask students to compare and contrast octopuses with squid and cuttlefish.
Ask students to learn about the habits and biology of the octopus.
Teach students how scientists argue for and against octopus intelligence.

A one page handout will be provided for each class. This handout is meant to assist the students in taking notes, so they can compete in the team quiz each day in class. Is your learner new to taking notes? Not to worry! The quiz is short, basic, and only for fun!

I have done research on octopuses, squid, and cuttle fish for years in preparation for a writing project.  I've amassed a lot of biology knowledge about these creatures, their habitats, subspecies, and learning abilities along the way.  Meanwhile, I know how to turn children's minds towards learning and absorbing knowledge while making class exiting and engaging.  This class will challenge students to think about what counts as intelligence in the scientific world.  More importantly, students will become active learners in an attempt to solve the mystery of how the octopus can have developed its curiosity and intelligence without being a social creature.
