What if there was a world with clashing rings? Or a dark moon few dare to visit? Pick a part of the world that’s all your own and people it with a made-up society. Do monsters roam your land? Space ships? Or is it a time portal to somewhere else? In every workshop class we start with imaginative brainstorming exercises. Students then write fiction or poetry for twenty-five minutes. Afterwards, anyone can volunteer to read her writing out loud. Everyone in the workshop will say what they like about the story and/or recall details they remember about the writing. There's no homework--just fun, as students improve their ability to plan out longer writing, gather together ideas, and use strong motivation to improve their writing and narrative skills. Students should have access to writing paper and pen for each workshop class. We want to put our inner critic away--it's too easy to erase words on the computer. Tip: have a folder on hand so you can put stories from the workshop together at the end of each day.
