Hello space lovers and learners! I am so excited to learn about our solar system while creating art with you. Class begins with introductions and time for learners to share things they know about NASA, space, our planets, the Milky Way, other galaxies and more. Sometimes I even tell a space joke or two! Next, learners will make sure they have their paper or crafting supplies ready to go. Learners may draw using pencils, colored pencils, markers or crayons. If your learner prefers painting or using clay, they are welcome to do so! I’ve even had friends build planets with Lego bricks. Once we are all ready, we will begin learning about our solar system. We start with our sun, the biggest thing in our solar system. Next we will learn about and create mercury, Venus, Mars, the Asteroid Belt, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune! Learners are encouraged to think about the size and scale of each planet (or star), colors and placement within our solar system. At the end of class, students can spend time personalizing their solar systems if they wish. Does the sun need eyes and glasses? Sure thing! Do you want to draw all of Jupiter's moons? Have fun! Should you create your own planet? This is a fun class designed to get your learner thinking about our solar system.
Learning Goals
Students will have a fun time drawing while also learning about our solar system! We will learn about each planet (or star) as we draw it. What are its defining features? Are they hot or cold? Terrestrial or gas? Craters? Rocky or sandy?
Learners will also have the opportunity to socialize with other like-minded peers, share ideas, take turns and practice online class etiquette.
Other Details
Supply List
Students need at least 2 pieces of computer sized paper taped together to draw on and any sort of art supplies they would like to use. I recommend colored pencils, crayons or fine tipped markers. If your learner wants to paint or sculpt, please provide the proper paint or clay. I recommend an air dry clay (like Model Magic) or polymer clay (like Sculpey) that needs to be baked to harden.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
