1 hour per week. Homework will be assigned each week and should be uploaded to the classroom before class. Each writing assignment includes a composition checklist, so what is expected is easily outlined. Papers are graded on a rubric, based on a checklist provided with each assignment.Letter Grade

Adventures in Writing: Part 2 of 3 (30 Lessons Total) Course Overview: This theme-based writing curriculum allows students to explore a variety of fascinating subjects while learning to write with the Structure and Style® method. Topics include Roman hoplites, tornadoes, Leif Eriksson, and more. The course incorporates stylistic techniques and grammar concepts, reinforced through fun videos and songs. Required Textbook: Adventures in Writing Student Book Recommended Materials: 3-ring binder File folders Envelopes or ziplock bags for vocabulary cards Class Structure: Weekly thematic video Vocabulary review and practice Introduction and reinforcement of stylistic techniques Grammar concepts through videos and songs Weekly writing assignments Homework submission via Google Classroom Syllabus: Week 1 - Unit 4, Lesson 12 Topic: Summarizing a Reference - Leif Eriksson Activities: Banned words (see/saw), summarizing techniques, vocabulary review. Week 2 - Lesson 13 Topic: Hagia Sophia Activities: Watch theme video, review vocabulary, writing assignment. Week 3 - Lesson 14 Topic: John Muir Activities: Banned words (go/went), writing techniques, vocabulary review. Week 4 - Lesson 15 Topic: Magnets Activities: Because clause, writing assignment, vocabulary review. Week 5 - Lesson 16 Topic: Dolphins Activities: Watch theme video, review vocabulary, writing assignment. Week 6 - Unit 5, Lesson 17 Topic: Writing from Pictures - Rooster, Part 1 Activities: Introduction to picture-based writing, vocabulary review. Week 7 - Lesson 18 Topic: Rooster, Part 2 Activities: Continue picture-based writing, vocabulary review. Week 8 - Lesson 19 Topic: Treasure Map, Part 1 Activities: Watch theme video, start writing assignment, vocabulary review. Week 9 - Lesson 20 Topic: Treasure Map, Part 2 Activities: Quality adjectives, banned words (good/bad), complete writing assignment, vocabulary review. Homework: Homework assignments will be provided each week and will come from the student book. Students are expected to upload their homework to Google Classroom before the next class for review. Additional Notes: Stylistic techniques such as -ly adverbs, who-which clauses, strong verbs, because clauses, quality adjectives, adverbial clauses, and sentence openers will be integrated throughout the course. Vocabulary cards should be organized using file folders and envelopes or ziplock bags for easy review and practice.
Learning Goals
Moving through Units 1–7 of the IEW methods, students will take notes, summarize narrative stories, write from pictures, put together a mini research report, and compose creative essays, games, vocabulary, and more.
