Let's learn about Mount Rushmore and the presidents carved on it!

During this 6 week class, we will dive into history using the books from the "Who Was" and "Where Is" book series. This series of books brings a lot of powerful information on people, places, and events to children in both a straightforward and fun way! These books appeal to both boys and girls and are designed for readers and reluctant readers alike!

Each week our book club will meet to discuss the book we read during the previous week, with the exception of the first week, that is an introduction/activity based class (we will not read books in class). Children will also be asked to bring a book based project. This project is meant to spark some creativity, help with those that really benefit from hands on learning, and help bring history to life. Projects can be drawings, paintings, Lego builds, dioramas, a poem, or anything your child would like to share to express their vision of what they learned from each book. Projects will be shared during the class meeting time, which will encourage public speaking, allowing learners to talk to each other and make friends

Each learner will get a Mount Rushmore Book Club card and a "stamp" each week after finishing their books!

Our first class will be an introductory class, where we will set the structure of future club meetings, and have some fun learning about Mount Rushmore. Future classes will be structured with a short introductory period, discussion time, sharing of projects, and if time allows, in class visual aids. Each week I will also send a printable to the classroom to help learners remember the key points of each book

Why take this class?
I like to approach learning from multiple perspectives. I want learners to enjoy learning and feel comfortable with their ideas. Using reading, audio and visual aids, printables, discussion, and hands-on learning, allows learners to experience what they are learning, not just remember what was put in front of them. My goal is for learners to learn and have fun while doing it, in hopes that they simply fall in love with learning.

Ages or grades of learners-
This class is designed to allow for students of various ages to participate, however, I would say the average range is 8-12. I have had learners outside this range, so if you have any questions, feel free to ask.

Books required-
No books are needed or required to be read prior to the first class. We begin reading AFTER the first class, meaning that books can be ordered as late as after the first class. These books can be purchased, downloaded, or borrowed from the library, but the list is as follows (in order they are discussed in class)…

Who Was George Washington
Who Was Thomas Jefferson
Who Was Abraham Lincoln
Who Was Theodore Roosevelt
Where Is Mount Rushmore

*Beyond the reading of the book, children are asked to make a book based project each week. Books can be on tape, read, or read to learners, that is left up to the learner and guardian discretion.

History is full of things that can be unpleasant. During our reading we will learn about things like war and slavery, but we will also see how people overcame much of this. This is a safe environment to learn in and a great place to express our feelings about events of the past. Below are some specific items in each book that could be new to learners... George Washington was a slaveholder. Thomas Jefferson was a slaveholder, he also was in a relationship with his wife's half sister, who was a slave, after his wife died. This can be a topic of debate, however, in class we just discuss the facts in the book... some of which might be new to learners. Abraham Lincoln worked hard to free slaves but this book does discuss slavery and the Civil War. Lincoln was also assassinated and that is discussed. Theodore Roosevelt became president after McKinley was assassinated and also had an assassination attempt on him. Roosevelt loved the environment but enjoyed hunting... which is discussed in the book. Mount Rushmore was built by a gentleman that was once a member of the KKK, which is briefly mentioned in the book, as is his actions to later denounce the group. The book also talks about Native Americans and their struggles with the US government. Both topics might be new to learners.
受講に必要なもの
Students will need a copy of the book. It can be downloaded on a Kindle device instantly, purchased directly, or borrowed from the library. Parents, I will email a book list shortly after enrollment.

Before class I will send the Book Club card for us to cut out in class or for you to make before class. I will also send the printable for our craft for class one. For that craft you will need the printable that I send, glue, scissors, crayons or markers, and either construction paper or printer paper.

Students will also need supplies for their projects. Depending on what they want to do, most supplies will be on hand, such as paper, cardboard, glue, crayons, scissors... and if they'd like to just write a poem or build with legos... that is just as good!

I have been a teacher on Outschool since 2020 and I teach on 2 additional online platforms. I have a biology background, however, I studied US and World History for 3 years in college, as well as 2 years of Chinese. I have also trained in a non-credited format, for many years, with an author and speaker who specializes in teaching children character qualities.

I have always enjoyed teaching. My first teaching position was in Moscow, Russia, teaching English as a second language. Since then, I’ve taught in various settings which include a cooperative, a preschool, and as a tutor in the areas of math, science, and English. I also am a homeschool mom!

I have taught this class to different groups at a cooperative, for both lower and upper elementary students. I enjoy teaching a subject or principle and including different areas of study along with the original idea.
