Take a trip in a time machine to unravel the mystery of how New York City's first subway could be built completely in secret. Who was responsible for this incredible project? What was so unusual about this particular subway? And, why was it built in secret? 

Through a slide presentation, learners will travel back in time to 1870 New York City to explore the conditions in the city that led Alfred Ely Beach to take the enormous risk of secretly building a subway under Broadway, using technology he invented. Learners will be presented with facts from which they will be asked to draw conclusions. Using a handout I provide to guide them, students will record important details about this unusual project so that they can report back to Professor Macintosh and answer her questions about this mystery. All students will be encouraged to discuss their thoughts and ideas throughout our time together. There is no special experience or knowledge required for this class.
