Welcome to History in Pictures Part 2! This class is designed for learners who have completed most or all of History in Pictures. If your learner has not taken any History in Pictures classes, please see the listing for that course or message me for more information.

In this follow up class, we will continue our exploration of US History and primary sources with inquiry into new topics and deep dives into previous topics of study. Everything you love about History in Pictures- class discussions, interesting images, and of course, the quack timer- will continue in this follow up class. In addition, we will look at different types of sources including maps, artifacts and even a few documents to deepen our knowledge and understanding of the week's topic. We will also explore difficult topics including slavery, warfare and genocide. As always, this class remains dyslexia friendly which means no reading or writing will be expected during our class time. Any documents presented will be read aloud.

Each week we examine a specific historical topic through images and inquiry. Learners will continue to develop their critical thinking skills by sharing observations, prior knowledge, asking questions and working together to create inferences about the images. As the instructor I provide information on the time period and stories behind the images as we collaborate to determine the importance of each work and how it contributes to our understanding of both the past and present. While the class is discussion based and designed to foster interaction and cooperation, learners are welcome to participate at their comfort level. If your learner prefers to listen or engage in the discussion through the chat box, that works too!

Resources for further study of the week's topic, along with an optional enrichment project, are shared at the end of each class.

It is important to know that this class is taught with an inclusive approach to history and images and stories of Americans from a broad range of backgrounds will be shared and discussed. Topics such as racism, prejudice, warfare, etc. will be addressed as they come up in a thoughtful and age-appropriate way. In addition, the class content does include some images that learners may find disturbing. Please know that any disturbing or graphic images shown are done in order to promote factual understanding of the topic and not to sensationalize it or cause harm/discomfort for learners. That said, it is possible that your learner may feel discomfort as a result of viewing some images or learning about some topics, for example topics pertaining to warfare, slavery, genocide, etc. If you are concerned about whether this class is a good fit for your learner, please feel free to message me anytime and/or consult our topic list to see which topics will be discussed each week. For more information, refer to the parental guidance section of this listing.

This is an ongoing subscription class that learners can join and leave anytime! If you do wish to drop the class, please note that Outschool charges the subscriptions each week on Sunday.

I put a great deal of thought into teaching history in a way that is age appropriate for learners while also being true to the realities of what really happened. I have had extensive training in teaching difficult topics from organizations such as National Humanities Center and the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching. A high level of care and consideration has been applied when selecting resources and images for the course that will help learners gain an understanding of the past. These resources include, but are not limited to, materials from PBS Learning Media, the Smithsonian Institution, and Facing History and Ourselves, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping teachers and students stand up to racism through learning and exploring history. Some disturbing images (example: images of Civil War battlefields, images of Nazi death camps) will be shown in this class but I avoid using images that are overly graphic. That said, it is important that learners and families are comfortable with discussion and images pertaining to sensitive and difficult topics. If you have any concerns about whether this is an appropriate course for your learner, please reach out to me.

I am a licensed social studies educator (NC Teaching License) with a M.Ed. in Secondary Social Studies education. I hold an undergraduate degree in History with a minor in Political Science along with a Masters degree in Secondary Social Studies Education. I am also a homeschooling mom of two children. I have over fifteen years of experience teaching a variety of social studies topics including the history of many marginalized groups in the United States and other stories that are often not told in mainstream history courses. I have taken professional development courses with a focus on inclusivity in teaching history through institutions including the National Humanities Center, Smithsonian Institution and the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching. I am also certified to teach Advanced Placement United States History and Advanced Placement United States Government and Politics and have taught both courses for over ten years.
