Assignments
1 hour per week. Students will need to read a chapter of Learning How to Learn by Barbara Oakley before each class. I will also provide recommended activities to practice the ideas we learn in class.

In this course, your middle schooler will develop a 'learning toolkit' that will help them understand new ideas, learn more deeply, and remember what they learn later on. 

Using Barbara Oakley's book for teens and tweens - Learning How to Learn - as our text, we will take a deep dive into brain science and how we can develop study skills to take advantage of how our brains work.

This course isn't just theory, though - we'll practice study strategies throughout the class, including the pomodoro technique to beat procrastination, creating metaphors, note-taking, and deliberate practice. We will also learn about people who overcame learning challenges and went on to succeed in their fields of study. Together we will develop our personal learning goals and reflect on how we learn best.

For each lesson, students will read one chapter of the course text and test different study skills as they learn new material. Each class will include an icebreaker, a discussion of the chapter, opportunities to experiment with different ways of learning, and encouragement to apply these ideas to their every day studies.

My class will be conversational, upbeat, and as hands on as possible. Students will be encouraged to interact throughout the class, contributing to the discussion, actively participating, and sharing their thought processes along the way. Class size is small and limited to five students.

Lesson 1:
Learning Mindset
 In this lesson, students will decide their goals for the course and identify challenges they face in learning.

Two Types of Thinking
 Students will learn about the 'focused' and 'diffuse' modes of thinking and how to use them to learn more easily.

Beat Procrastination
 This lesson covers the reasons we procrastinate and simple methods to overcome procrastination.

Supply List
This class will use Learning How to Learn by Barbara Oakley throughout the class. Students will need a copy of the book (print or eBook) in order to participate fully in the course.
