I run 'Study Skills for Success', a class for students with ADHD and Autism to boost their study habits and academic success. It's designed for parents seeking specific support for their children's learning.

Class experience

US Grade 5 - 10
Beginner - Advanced Level
In the "Study Skills for Success" one-on-one coaching sessions, students with Autism and ADHD will learn a variety of skills and strategies tailored to their unique learning needs. The learning goals for these sessions are detailed and specific, focusing on both academic and personal development. Here's what students will learn:

Effective Study Techniques: Students will learn how to create a study plan that suits their learning style, use active reading strategies to improve comprehension, and apply memory aids to enhance retention.

Time Management Skills: Learners will master the art of organizing their study schedule, prioritizing tasks effectively, and breaking down assignments into manageable parts to avoid feeling overwhelmed.

Note-Taking Strategies: Students will discover different note-taking methods (such as the Cornell method, mind mapping, or visual notes) and determine which technique works best for them, improving their ability to capture and recall important information.

Goal Setting and Motivation: Learners will be taught how to set realistic, achievable goals, and find motivation to stay on track. This includes understanding the importance of small wins and how to celebrate progress.

Test Preparation and Test-Taking Strategies: Students will learn how to prepare for tests efficiently, manage test anxiety, and apply strategies during exams to improve performance, such as time management, question analysis, and relaxation techniques.

Self-Advocacy and Communication Skills: Learners will gain skills in advocating for their needs in academic settings, including how to communicate effectively with teachers and peers about their learning preferences and accommodations.

Focus and Concentration Techniques: Students will explore methods to enhance their focus and concentration during study sessions, including managing distractions, using focus timers, and creating an optimal study environment.

Sensory Management Strategies: For students with sensory sensitivities, strategies will be shared on how to create a sensory-friendly study space and use sensory tools effectively to aid learning.

Stress Management and Mindfulness: Learners will be introduced to techniques for managing stress and anxiety related to academic work, including mindfulness exercises and breathing techniques to enhance calm and focus.

Social Skills in Academic Settings: For learners who find social aspects of school challenging, we'll cover strategies for participating in group projects, navigating classroom dynamics, and building positive relationships with peers and educators.

By achieving these learning goals, students with Autism and ADHD will not only improve their academic skills but also gain confidence, become more self-aware, and develop a toolkit of strategies for navigating both school and daily life more effectively.
Building on my extensive background in supporting learners with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), I have also developed a deep expertise in assisting students with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). This expertise has been cultivated through dedicated study, professional development, and practical experience, enabling me to understand and address the unique challenges and strengths associated with ADHD.

My journey into specializing in ADHD support began with recognizing the overlap and distinctions between ASD and ADHD, prompting me to explore strategies that uniquely benefit ADHD learners. Through this exploration, I've engaged in specialized training programs and workshops aimed at understanding the neurobiological underpinnings of ADHD, as well as the most effective educational and behavioral strategies to support these learners.

This training has equipped me with a comprehensive toolkit for helping students with ADHD improve their focus, organization, time management, and study skills. I have learned to apply a variety of instructional strategies that are tailored to the high energy levels, creativity, and sometimes impulsive nature of students with ADHD. These strategies include but are not limited to, incorporating movement and physical activity into learning, using visual aids and hands-on materials, breaking tasks into smaller, manageable steps, and employing technology and apps designed to enhance focus and organization.

In my practice, I have had the opportunity to apply these strategies in one-on-one tutoring sessions and within classroom settings, witnessing firsthand the positive impact they can have on students with ADHD. My approach emphasizes the strengths and potential of each learner, fostering a learning environment where students with ADHD feel understood, supported, and empowered to achieve their best.

Moreover, I am committed to ongoing professional development in the field of ADHD support. Just as with my work with ASD learners, I stay informed about the latest research, techniques, and technologies that can assist students with ADHD. This commitment ensures that my teaching methods are evidence-based, innovative, and tailored to meet the evolving needs of ADHD learners.

Through a balanced focus on both ASD and ADHD, I bring a holistic perspective to neurodiverse education. My goal is to create a learning environment that recognizes and celebrates the unique contributions of all learners, equipping them with the skills and confidence needed to navigate both academic and personal challenges. With a passion for supporting neurodiverse learners and a comprehensive foundation in both ASD and ADHD, I am dedicated to unlocking the potential of every student, helping them to achieve success and fulfillment in their educational journey and beyond.
As this class focuses on social skills coaching for learners, there are no specific content warnings or safety precautions necessary.
