Before Jamestown and Plymouth Colonies, the English attempted to settle on Roanoke Island near present-day North Carolina. Between 1587 and 1590 this colony disappeared. What happened to the approximately 120 English settlers who camped there? Did they integrate into Native American society? Did they build a ship and sink while trying to sail back to England? We do not know for sure the fate of the settlers, but we will explore the history of the island and the theories surrounding its disappearance. A short slide lesson will be presented along with film clips and student discussion. We will also use online tools to explore the island, and how it looks today. After covering the material, we will take a Kahoot for fun and knowledge retention.
学習到達目標
Our goal is to learn the history of Roanoke Island from colonial times through the U.S. Civil War. We will explore the lives of the native residents, including Secotan Chief, Wingina, and the English attempts to settle the island.

For sensitive learners, the fact that everyone probably died on Roanoke, could be upsetting. The Roanoke Indians were also treated terribly by the English. Otherwise the material is not graphic beyond typical social studies lessons.
