Before Jamestown and Plymouth Colonies, the English attempted to settle on Roanoke Island near present-day North Carolina. Between 1587 and 1590 this colony disappeared. Our goal is to learn the history of Roanoke Island from colonial times through the U.S. Civil War. We will explore the lives of the native residents, including Secotan Chief, Wingina, and the English attempts to settle the island.
I have taught history lessons to more than 140 Outschool students from 9-17 years old, and before that I taught history in college. I strive to be sensitive to students when presenting difficult or sensitive material.

For sensitive learners, the fact that everyone probably died on Roanoke, could be upsetting. The Roanoke Indians were also treated terribly by the English. Otherwise the material is not graphic beyond typical social studies lessons.
