The inside of your body is an amazing place. You have cells, tissues, organs, and systems working together to keep you alive. We will explore the neurological system, the cardiovascular system, the respiratory system and the senses, the digestive system, and the musculoskeletal system. We will learn what they are, the components of the system, and how they work. We will watch a short video and then we will complete a project or experiment every day related to the system we are studying. I encourage children to participate fully in my classes. Classes are designed for the age group. I keep all of my classes small, so everyone has a chance to share and ask questions. Our camp schedule will be: Day 1: Cells and The Neurological System - Brain, spinal cord, nerves / We will be making a playdough brain. Day 2: The Cardiovascular System - Heart, Blood Vessels, and Blood / We will be making a basic, working stethoscope. Day 3: The Respiratory System and the Senses - The Lungs and Breathing, the Senses / We will be making a model of the lungs. Day 4: The Digestive System - The Mouth, Stomach, and Intestines/ We will be doing a digestive system experiment. Day 5: The Musculoskeletal System - The Bones and Muscles/ We will be making a model of the spine We will complete a project every day. All projects are designed to be completed by the camper, but they will need some assistance cutting parts of their project on Day 2. You can pre-cut the items prior to the day of camp. You will need the following materials for camp: Day 1: Playdough in three colors Day 2: We need the TOP of a plastic water bottle. Cut off the top of a plastic water bottle (approximately 4 inches from the top which is the side where the cap screws on). You can discard the bottom of the bottle. Plus an empty paper towel tube, tape (Masking tape works best.) Day 3: Two plastic zip lock bags, two bendy straws, tape Day 4: Slice of bread, one large bowl, 1 cup water, 1/4 cup vinegar, a towel, two forks Day 5: Three empty toilet paper tubes, a disposable straw or a pipe cleaner, tape (masking tape works best), scissors

We will be studying the human body systems including the neurological, digestive, skeletal/muscular, respiratory, and cardiovascular systems. We will be using correct terms for body parts within these systems. We will not be covering the reproductive system. We will discuss the kidneys and the bladder in our study of the digestive system.
We will complete a project or experiment for each class. We may use scissors during the project. An adult should be available to assist if necessary.
Students will need adult assistance on Day 2. They will need a plastic water bottle to be cut in half prior to the class.
Allergy alert: Playdough may contain wheat or wheat products.

Hello. I am Annette the Teacher. I can't wait to teach you here on Outschool.
My educational philosophy is to foster the growth and knowledge of my students through personalized, project-based, and collaborative learning. I believe in nurturing every student's quest for knowledge through Activity-Based Learning. Learning should be fun. My classes are based on hands-on learning projects. In my classes, you get into the action with experiments, activities, projects, crafts, cooking, and more.
I have been teaching for many years. I have over three decades of experience teaching children of all ages. I have a B.A. in Sociology with minors in Biology, Chemistry, and Writing from the University of Pittsburgh. I have homeschooled my children from Pre-School through their High School graduations. All of my classes are interactive. I encourage students to fully participate in class. My classes feature hands-on activities, books, and worksheets I write for the class. No matter the subject, my classes get the students involved.
I have been working as a tutor for 10+ years.
I am a writer and artist. I use my extensive knowledge and experience to create unique classes for every student. I enjoy teaching science, history, and art classes. I bring history alive with my "Big History ..." classes where students learn about key times in history through interactive lessons and projects. "Paint like ... Famous Artists" art classes where students learn about famous artists and create their own artwork based on the artists' works. "Smart Science" classes where we explore science and complete experiments and projects. I know hands-on, interactive experiences are the best way for children to learn.
I also have experience working with Special Needs children. I am Mom to a child on the autism spectrum and a child with serious medical needs and ADHD. If your child has special needs, please contact me so I can work with you and your child.
I can't wait to share my lifelong love of learning with you. There is so much knowledge out there, come and discover it with me!
