Humans have been inventing since ancient times. Some inventions were before their time, some were small, and some changed the world. Inventors create their inventions using engineering principles. During this class, we will learn about five different types of engineering, and inventors and inventions throughout history. We will apply what we learn by making our own engineering projects.

We will use models, pictures, presentations, and videos during the class. We will do an engineering project at the end of each class. Some of the projects are teacher-lead, some are exploration projects allowing students to make their own creations.

Day 1: Ancient Engineering / We will build a Greek Building - Introduction to the Camp Bridge Project for Friday
Day 2: Mechanical Engineering / We will make a catapult
Day 3: Structural Engineering/ We will make buildings
Day 4: Chemical Engineering / We will make lemon soda
Day 5: Civil Engineering/ We will make a bridge - Students can make any kind of bridge project using any building materials. They should work on their bridge throughout the week. They will be able to present their bridge to the class on Friday, but presentation is optional.

Please have the following supplies ready for each class. For the most part, substitutions will not work. The best tape to use for these projects is regular masking tape. Regular clear Scotch tape can work. Duck Tape and Packing Tape will not work. White glue is needed when glue is required for the project. Glue sticks and hot glue will not work. We will be using scissors in many of our projects. If your student needs assistance with cutting, please have an adult nearby.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Note: Students will be building their own bridge project outside of camp throughout the week. They can use any building materials they have on hand. They can build any kind of bridge they want out of any materials they want to use. A sample bridge will be presented on Monday.

Supplies needed for each day:

Day 1: Two pieces of cardboard (about 4 x 6 inches), 4-6 empty toilet paper tubes, white glue, tape, a rock, stone, or book.
Day 2: 8 craft sticks or popsicle sticks, three rubber bands, 1 plastic spoon
Day 3: Toothpicks and playdough
Day 4: The juice of 1 lemon or 1/4 cup lemon juice, 1 cup of cold water, 3 tablespoons sugar, 1/4 teaspoon baking soda, 1 large cup or glass, 1 spoon, 1 plate
Day 5: Bridge Presentation Day - Students should bring their completed bridge projects to camp. They will have the opportunity to present their bridge to the class, if they so choose.

If your student has special needs, please reach out to me via personal message so we can make accommodations if necessary.

学士号 Minors: Biology, Chemistry, and Writingから 社会学 へ
Hello. I am Annette the Teacher. I can't wait to teach you here on Outschool.

My educational philosophy is to foster the growth and knowledge of my students through personalized, project-based, and collaborative learning. I believe in nurturing every student's quest for knowledge through Activity-Based Learning. Learning should be fun. My classes are based on hands-on learning projects. In my classes, you get into the action with experiments, activities, projects, crafts, cooking, and more.

I have been teaching for many years. I have over three decades of experience teaching children of all ages. I have a B.A. in Sociology with minors in Biology, Chemistry, and Writing from the University of Pittsburgh. I have homeschooled my children from Pre-School through their High School graduations. All of my classes are interactive. I encourage students to fully participate in class. My classes feature hands-on activities, books, and worksheets I write for the class. No matter the subject, my classes get the students involved.

I have been working as a tutor for 10+ years.

I am a writer and artist. I use my extensive knowledge and experience to create unique classes for every student. I enjoy teaching science, history, and art classes. I bring history alive with my "Big History ..." classes where students learn about key times in history through interactive lessons and projects. "Paint like ... Famous Artists" art classes where students learn about famous artists and create their own artwork based on the artists' works. "Smart Science" classes where we explore science and complete experiments and projects. I know hands-on, interactive experiences are the best way for children to learn.

I also have experience working with Special Needs children. I am Mom to a child on the autism spectrum and a child with serious medical needs and ADHD. If your child has special needs, please contact me so I can work with you and your child.

I can't wait to share my lifelong love of learning with you. There is so much knowledge out there, come and discover it with me!
