In this two-day class, students will perform an advanced dissection of a shark specimen, specifically, the dogfish shark. Dissection is a tool used in life sciences and biology to help students understand different species anatomy, as well as their own anatomy and physiology. This class is advanced. You must have either taken intermediate dissection classes of mine or message me with your prior dissection experience. This is NOT a class for a novice.

In this dissection, learners will have the opportunity to observe the anatomy of a cartilaginous fish. Ideally, if they have taken the intermediate perch dissection, they will be able to see the comparable anatomy. We will begin with external anatomy and begin the incisions needed to open the specimen on class one. Class two will be devoted to the internal anatomy.  As the dissection begins, students can expect to observe the spinal cord, stomach, intestines, heart, liver, and kidneys. We will continue to discuss the terms dorsal, ventral, anterior, and posterior in terms of each specimen. 

Students will need to have their own dissection kit, 22-27" shark specimen (either injected or noninjected), and safety wear. I recommend gloves and glasses/goggles for this specimen as it is one of the the largest we have done in our dissection series so far. Please also have a clean place to work and plenty of paper towels, wash cloths, or tissues nearby for clean-up. This dissection will take two-days and the specimen will need to be REFRIGERATED in between classes. Wrap specimen in a large plastic bag or plastic wrap to preserve between Day 1 and 2.
