In this class learners will learn; how to best approach a veterinary practice about the possibility of shadowing a doctor or technician, what to expect, how to conduct themselves, and be safe during their visit. 

Week 1 - How to best approach a veterinary practice about possible opportunities to shadow. Topics include  to say when calling including: how to conduct yourself in a professional manner, what to share about yourself, and more.
 
Week 2 - What to expect that day, including: how to introduce yourself, generally expected conduct, practice rooms and equipment you might see. 

Week 3 - Safety precautions and what to watch out for at the hospital during your time there. What to wear will be discussed. 

Week 4 - How to get the most out of the experience. How to thank the practice and the doctor/team members who you shadowed. Why is is a good idea to shadow at multiple practices if there is an opportunity to do so. 


DISCLAIMER: This course does not guarantee  a shadow opportunity at a practice. It will be the responsibility of the student/family to explore availability in their local area.

I have been a certified veterinary technician for more than 30 years working in a mixed animal practice that also sees exotics and injured wildlife and a regional 24 hour emergency clinic. Along with my time as a technician, I have also been the HR manager and in charge of external and shadows for many years at a 26 doctor practice. 

I have a BS in Organizational Leadership, a MEd from Colorado State University and a Master of Veterinary Education (MVEd) from Lincoln Memorial University’s School of Veterinary Medicine. 

I have been teaching  at a local colleges in veterinary assistant programs. I taught a variety of Veterinary Science programs for grades 3-5, 6-8, and high school. I currently teach in an equine studies program at a local private university. 

Along with all that I am also a homeschool mom! At home, my family has 2 mini horses, a Paint horse, 4 Nigerian dwarf goats, 9 chickens and 4 cats!  I am passionate about sharing my experience and love for animals and veterinary medicine with others!
