10 lessons//10 Weeks
Week 1Lesson 1Basic NutritionIn this lesson learners will become familiar with essential nutrients and what is require for feeding cats and dogs. We will also distinguish "ingredient vs nutrient" which is important for the next lesson on reading pet food labels.Week 2Lesson 2Reading Pet Food LabelsIn this class learners will begin to understand how read pet food labels and what tricks pet food companies use to market their products. Pet food labels will be provided in the lesson slides. Learners may bring their own for practice.Week 3Lesson 3Care of The Hospitalized PatientCare of pets in the hospital will be discussed including how to get cats and dogs out of their cages safely, cleaning and disinfection, and patient treatment sheet use and practice will be demonstrated as learners follow along.Week 4Lesson 4Recognizing PainHow to recognize pain in the canine and feline patients will be shown and a pain scale will be utilized during in class practice.Week 5Lesson 5Canine Behavior/ Body LanguageBasic body language signals will be discussed with special focus on stress, fear, anxiety and aggression, as these are common in a veterinary setting. Learners will be provided with follow up videos.Week 6Lesson 6Feline Body Language and the Feline Friendly PracticeFeline body language signals will be discussed, and how we can provide a "feline friendly" experience and learners will brainstorm ways that they can help to make cat's veterinary visits less stressful for everyone.Week 7Lesson 7Care of Neonatal Kittens and PuppiesThe care and feeding of neonatal kittens and puppies will be discussed along with special considerations for orphans.Week 8Lesson 8Dog and Cat Breed GameA breed identification game will be played in class! We will discuss why knowing a pet's breed may be very important when caring for the in a veterinary hospital. Learners will be given instructions on optional learner presentations to be given during our last two weeks of class.Week 9Lesson 9Learner Dog/Cat Breed PresentationsLearners will be asked to research and create a presentation (written/read or by PowerPoint/Google Slides/etc, to be given in class either this week or next week. Information on these will be provided on week 8. PRESENTATIONS ARE ENCOURAGED BUT NOT REQUIRED.Week 10Lesson 10Learner Dog/Cat Breed Presentations and Course Wrap UpWe will have our final breed presentations and do a course wrap up including getting learner feedback on the course.

- Learners will participate in discussions on veterinary science focused topics and will be encouraged to use their critical thinkings skills.
I have been a certified veterinarytechnician for more than 30 years, have a MEd from Colorado State University and a Master of Veterinary Education (MVEd) from Lincoln Memorial University’s School of Veterinary Medicine. I have been teaching at local colleges in veterinary Assistant Programs and an equine studies program, as well a variety of Veterinary Science programs for grades 3-5, 6-8, and high school. I am also a homeschool mom! At home, my family has 2 mini horses, a Paint Horse, 4 Nigerian dwarf goats, 9 chickens and 4 cats! I am passionate about sharing my experience and love for animals and veterinary medicine with others!

CLASS 2: A pet food label will be used. Teacher will provide an example, or the learner may bring their own cat/dog food label. Additional YouTube video links will be safely embedded into the classroom for optional viewing.
