The first case is the Tamám Shud case which involves the mysterious death of an unidentified man on Somerton Beach, near Adelaide, Australia. Anything that may have helped to identify the man, down to the brand name tags on his clothes, was removed. Only a scrap of paper with the words Tamám Shud (“it is ended”), from the Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyam, was found in a secret pocket in the waistband of his pants was found. Recent highly advanced forensic work has revealed an intriguing possibility related to the man’s identity and his connection to a person from the area. The second case is the Dyatlov Pass Incident. In late 1959, nine hikers/skiers died in a bizarre incident which has led to wild theories about KGB involvement, aliens, and even a strange natural phenomenon involving wind rushing through mountain passes. The hikers shared a tent, which had been ripped open from the inside. All nine died, and none appeared to be suicide. Their causes of death were varied, and some of their clothes were radioactive. We will examine the known evidence, and evaluate hypothesies, including the possibility of a staged crime scene. The third case will be either the alleged Sonic Attack against U.S. Embassy personnel in Cuba starting in 2016 or the Monster of Florence, a serial killer active between 1965 and 1985, which some have hypothesized may have a connection to a famous American case from the same time period.
Metas de aprendizaje
Students will strengthen their analytical reasoning skills as they learn how to apply evidence in unsolved cases, and to develop hypothesies to fit the evidence to date.
