We will begin with a session on the basic concepts and techniques used to create a profile of an offender in specific crimes. Students will be able to examine simple situations and discuss likely characteristics of the perpetrator. The second session will involve profiling of three famous cases. Week 1Lesson 1Core Profiling ConceptsThis lesson covers the purpose and mechanisms of profiling, as well as concepts such as Linkage Analysis, Homology.Week 2Lesson 2Steps in Creating a ProfileWe will examine the three main approaches to profiling, the steps to build a profile, and the importance of considering details about the crime scene and victims of a crime.Week 3Lesson 3Case StudiesWe will examine specific profiling issues related to Jack the Ripper, the Lindbergh Kidnapping, the Jon Benet Ramsey Murder, and the Zodiac.Week 4Lesson 4Case StudiesWe will examine specific profiling issues related to the D.B. (Dan) Cooper Hijacking, the Black Dahlia, Lizzie Borden.Week 5Lesson 5Mock Profiling Case 1We will cover the initial file submitted for a profile in a hypothetical case. Students will be able to ask for additional information and to point out details that will start us on the way to a profile.Week 6Lesson 6Mock Profiling Case 2Students will receive additional information, based on their requests. We will look at the evidence from different angles and develop a profile based on each student's preferred hypothesis.
I've been teaching forensic science at all levels, up through college, since 2005. I have developed classes on forensic and criminal psychology, and have utilized profiling techniques in my analysis of a variety of cases.
