Dive into the captivating world of forensic science at your own pace with this engaging asynchronous course. Designed for teens with a passion for true crime, this course uses popular documentaries, podcasts, and real-world case studies to bring forensic concepts to life. Through flexible, self-guided modules, you’ll explore the principles and techniques investigators use to solve crimes, from fingerprint analysis and DNA profiling to crime scene reconstruction and digital forensics. With the freedom to study on your own schedule, this course is perfect for independent learners who want to deepen their understanding of the science behind solving mysteries.

Each module features interactive activities, videos, and detailed case studies that bridge the gap between pop culture and real-world forensic science. All videos and activities are made available on Monday mornings, but students can work at their own pace and in their own time. Analyze the evidence from famous cases featured in true crime media, and discover the step-by-step processes forensic experts follow to crack the case. Podcasts and documentaries are paired with hands-on learning opportunities, such as virtual simulations and guided exercises, to ensure students connect theoretical concepts with practical applications. Optional reflection prompts and discussion boards encourage critical thinking and allow students to engage with peers if they choose.

By the end of the course, students will not only understand key forensic science techniques but also develop analytical and problem-solving skills that go beyond the world of crime scenes. Whether you’re a true crime enthusiast or simply curious about the intersection of science and storytelling, this course offers a rich, flexible learning experience that makes exploring forensic science both fun and educational. Lección 1:
Introduction to Forensic Science & Crime Scene Investigation
Students will explore the basics of forensic science, including its history and role in solving crimes. They will learn how investigators process crime scenes, document evidence, and maintain the chain of custody. Using examples from true crime documentaries and podcasts, students will see how these methods are applied to real-world investigations.
Lección 2:
Evidence Collection and Preservation
This week focuses on how forensic experts gather and preserve evidence like fibers, hair, and trace materials. Students will learn the importance of avoiding contamination during evidence collection and will explore how new forensic methods have helped crack challenging cases. By analyzing examples from true crime media, students will gain a deeper understanding of how meticulous evidence handling contributes to solving complex crimes.
Lección 3:
Fingerprint Analysis
Students will delve into the science of fingerprint analysis, learning to identify unique patterns like loops, whorls, and arches. Through virtual tools and activities, they will practice analyzing fingerprints and understanding their significance in criminal investigations. Real-world examples from true crime documentaries and podcasts will illustrate how fingerprint evidence has played a critical role in uncovering the truth.
Lección 4:
Blood Spatter and Bloodstain Pattern Analysis
This week introduces students to blood spatter analysis, showing how forensic scientists use patterns to reconstruct crime scenes. By studying examples from true crime media, students will explore how different types of bloodstains provide vital clues. Engaging activities and virtual demonstrations will allow students to apply these concepts in a practical way, reinforcing the role of forensic science in solving violent crimes.
