Homework suggestion: After learning the sequence basics and thematic activities in class, use the FREE copy of The R.I.S.E Sequence bookmark (attachment in classroom), and have your child write or draw the R.I.S.E activities that they loved doing so that they can use this version of the wellness sequence throughout the week. Your child can use their "notes" and adapt The R.I.S.E Sequence to have a duration anywhere from one minute to thirty minutes when they need a "brain reboot" or learning break during the rest of their week.Evaluación
Does the learner begin to adopt the 4 wellness activities naturally into their daily routines? That's the best way to see understanding!Experiencia de clase
Take a learning break that refocuses the brain! R.I.S.E is an acronym that helps students learn and remember the steps to a powerful wellness sequence that boosts neural activity in the brain, improves focus, concentration, and self-regulation. The 4 steps include: a hydration break, a movement break, mindful breathing, and positive affirmations. Each class will begin with social connection - learners briefly sharing something about themselves related to the theme. Class will then progress through all 4 steps of the wellness sequence with active and quiet moments, screen-share pictures, interactive games, stories, songs, and other activities. Each class will also be sprinkled with information about how our amazing BRAIN works. For example: "How does exercise grow my brain cells?" "Why does breathing calm my brain down?" "How much water do I need to drink for my brain to work well?" "How can saying positive things to myself make my brain stronger?" Students will experience a different "thematic version" of The R.I.S.E. Sequence in class each week including seasonal themes when appropriate (i.e. winter, ocean, insects, Earth Day, etc.). UPCOMING SEASONAL THEMES will include: Gingerbread Cookies Holiday Sweaters Reindeer Games Winter North Pole NON-SEASONAL THEMES: Calisthenics Yoga Alphabet Numbers Music Superheroes Animals Colors Holidays A free bookmark of the sequence will be sent to each student after the class!
Metas de aprendizaje
Students will learn when and why to use 4 self-care activities that help to reset their brain.
1. Hydration to keep the brain-fog away and help students to revitalize a tired, cranky, or unmotivated mood.
2. Movement to help pump oxygen infused blood to the brain and release the neurochemicals that activate the brain for learning.
3. Mindful breathing to saturate the brain with oxygen and help children learn to focus on their present moment.
4. Strong empowering words to help your child be their best self.

Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
The quick version of my background is that I’m a retired first grade teacher and reading specialist (after 34 years!), as well as a certified yoga instructor and movement specialist living in Southern California with my husband and adorable “teacher's pet” Buddy.
But, the story of how I became “The Brain Lady” began when I discovered the incredible science of neuroplasticity while studying yoga anatomy during advanced certifications.
Diving into a lay-person's study of neuroscience, I learned (and continue to learn) so many things that you might think an elementary school teacher should already know about the brain - and they definitely SHOULD! I learned how memory works, the way that physical movement affects learning, wellness habits that affect the ability to focus, make decisions and self-regulate, how a child’s early developmental movement patterns affect learning, and so much more! Surprisingly, none of my teacher training included this information - even though I attended a prestigious teachers college focused on developmental learning practices.
Armed with this knowledge, I began to step-outside-the-boxes I felt confined to as a public school teacher, and to teach based on neuroscience instead of mandated curriculum or traditional practices.
Using what I'd learned about the brain, and my many years of classroom experience, I developed a highly motivating and actionable wellness sequence called R.I.S.E. and quickly discovered that my students were showing increased focus, improved memory and retention of information, better self-regulation, fewer behavioral issues and consistently high attendance. My students thrived while using The R.I.S.E Sequence!
The incredibly empowering part of learning how our brain works is discovering that we are more in control than we think, and we CAN change our own brain, increase our potential for achievement, health and happiness. This is especially important for children to understand.
I knew that it was The R.I.S.E Sequence that was impacting student's brains in positive ways, and I wasn’t ready to leave all of my methods and enthusiasm for brain science behind when I retired. So that’s why I teach on Outschool now, and I look forward to making an impact on learners from around the world!
