Welcome to Pre-Algebra!

Each class does build so please be sure to review the prior weeks and have some knowledge on the lessons.


Class Structure
5 minutes - Welcome
15 minutes - Teach content
15 minutes - Guided Practice with new content
10 minutes - Independent Practice with new content

Throughout the entire class, many discussion questions will be asked in order to promote critical thinking, to help the students to relate to the lesson, and to introduce each topic within the lesson.

This class is best for any student ages 12 to 15, or those students looking to practice the pre-algebra middle school math objectives or skills. Students do not need to know the concepts or topics of the class beforehand. We will learn and review in class.

Week of September 11 – Subtract whole numbers, multiply whole numbers
Week of September 18 – Divide whole numbers, review and assessment
Week of September 25 – Intro to the language of algebra

Week of October 9 – Evaluate, simplify and translate expressions
Week of October 16 – Solving equations using the subtraction and addition properties of equality
Week of October 23 – Find multiples and factors, Prime factorization and the least common multiple, review and assessment
Week of October 30 – Intro to integers

Week of November 6 – Add integers
Week of November 13 – Subtract integers

Week of November 27 – Multiply and divide integers

Week of December 4 – Solve equations using integers, division property of equality, review and assessment
Week of December 11 – Intro to fractions, visualize fractions
Week of December 18 – Multiply and divide fractions

Week of January 8 – Multiply and divide mixed numbers and complex fractions
Week of January 15 – Add and subtract fractions with common and different denominators

Week of March 17 – Introduction to the properties of real numbers, commutative and associative properties
Week of March 24 – Distribute property, properties of identify, inverses and zero

Week of April 1 – System of measurement, review and assessment
Week of April 8 – Solve equations using the subtraction and addition properties of equality and the division and multiplication properties of equality
Week of April 15 – Solve equations with variables and constants on both sides, solve equations with fraction or decimal coefficients, review and assessment 
Week of April 22 – Intro to geometry, solve money applications 
Week of April 29 – Use properties, triangles and the Pythagorean Theorem 

Week of May 6 – Solve geometry applications: circle and irregular figures, solve geometry applications: volume and surface area
Week of May 13 – Solve formula for specific variable, review and assessment, add and subtract polynomials
Week of May 20 – Use of multiplication properties of exponents
Week of May 27 – Multiply polynomials, divide polynomials

Week of June 3 – Integer exponents and scientific notation, intro to factoring polynomials, review and assessment
Week of June 10 - Graphs

No accounts outside of Outschool will be needed to access any material. Material will be screenshared from either the text or a PDF/Google Slide.

1. Any printables, notes sheets, worksheets, etc. posted to the classroom before class. These should be printed and brought to class. Alternatively, the student can take notes in a notebook or on paper.
2. Please always bring paper and pencil with you to class. 
3. A calculator is also required for some chapters. 
4. A binder or folder is recommended to keep notes and worksheets organized.
