Summative Assessment At the end of the entire lesson series, learns will be provided with a performance-based task to demonstrate their new knowledge and skills learnt.

Experiencia de clase

Nivel de inglés: desconocido
Grado de EE. UU. 3 - 6
Nivel Beginner
In this engaging, ongoing class, learners aged 8-10 will embark on a coding journey within the world of Minecraft, using their very own Agent—a coding companion that follows them everywhere. With no prior coding experience required, students will learn how to program their Agent to perform a variety of tasks, making their Minecraft gameplay more efficient and creative.

What You’ll Learn:

Your coding adventure begins with getting to know your Agent. You’ll learn how to program it to move in different directions, manage its inventory, and even build a bridge across a pond. As you advance, you’ll take on bigger projects like designing a road network, constructing buildings and houses, and developing an entire Minecraft City. From creating parks with water features and flowers to designing a zoo with paths and animal enclosures, your coding skills will help you bring your ideas to life.

But the adventure doesn’t stop there! You’ll build a wind farm to power your city’s lighting systems and work alongside Dr. Barwin in the Animal Research Center (ARC), where you’ll explore different habitats (biomes) and learn about the challenges animals face. Throughout this journey, you'll spend 50% of your time coding independently and 50% collaborating with classmates.

Skills You’ll Develop:

Through hands-on activities, learners will develop a coding mindset and apply computational thinking to solve problems. Key coding concepts include:

- Algorithms
- Sequencing
- Loops & Nested Loops
- Conditionals & Nested Conditionals
- Testing & Debugging
- Boolean Operators
- Events & Event Handlers
- Variables & Functions

Class Structure:

This 1-hour class is divided into four parts:

Discussion (20 mins): We’ll start by discussing the day’s activity. I’ll share my screen, introduce key concepts, and we’ll brainstorm ways to solve the task at hand. Learners are encouraged to take notes.

Programming Time (30-40 mins): After our discussion, learners will work on their coding tasks. Completed tasks will be submitted via screenshot for evaluation.

Reflection (5 mins): As a group, we’ll reflect on what we learned during the day’s activity.

Free Play (Optional 1 hr): Learners can join me in one of my Minecraft Worlds to practice using their Agent in Adventure or Survival Mode.

Class Schedule:

Tuesdays at 8 PM EST

Saturday at 7AM EST

Dates: To be announced once enrollment is confirmed.
Please note that the class schedule is tentative and will be adjusted based on the group’s progress.

Important Details:

This class is designed for upper-primary learners aged 8-10 with little or no coding experience.

Each section can accommodate up to 6 learners.

The pace of the class will be determined by the learners, and content builds on itself as the course progresses.

Missed a lesson? Don’t worry—you can schedule a makeup session with me.

Before class starts, make sure to download Minecraft Education on your device. Login information will be provided at the beginning of the class.

Please sign up in advance—no last-minute enrollments.
Metas de aprendizaje
Students will build digital fluency skills, promote community, encourage a coding mindset, and develop computational thinking skills while completing Units 1 to 10.

Unit 1: Computing with Minecraft: The Agency and Basic Moves and The Agent (Sequencing and Variables)
Six activities where learners will learn how to Code the Agent using on-chat commands to move in different directions.

Unit 2: Computing with Minecraft: City Planner ( Coordinates/Positions and Loops)
Three activities where learners will explore new coding blocks and how they can assist them when building in Minecraft.

Unit 3: Computing with Minecraft: Parks and Recreation ( Sequencing, Loops and Variables)
Three activities where learners will expand their knowledge of MakeCode as they code their Agent to build a park in their Minecraft city.

Unit 4: Computing with Minecraft: A Zoo (Loops and Functions)
Three activities where learners will explore how code can be used to facilitate imagination and creativity. Students will focus on creating code with increasingly complex code while using the BUILDER blocks.

Unit 5: Computing with Minecraft: Wind Power ( Functions and Abstraction)
Three activities where learners will expand on their fluency in coding to create a wind farm.

Unit 6: Coding FUNdamentals 1: Sea Turtle Assistance (Algorithms, sequencing, and loops)
Five activities where learners must clean up sea turtle nesting grounds by coding the Agent. (Algorithms, sequencing, and loops)

Unit 7: Polar Bear Rescue (Sequencing and Conditional loops)
Four activities where learners utilize pseudocode to help them plan out their program to help the polar bear cub find its family.

Unit 8: Gray Wolves ( Nested Loops)
Four activities where learners test and code the Agent to secure the livestock at the farm from the gray wolves.

Unit 9: Ganymede & Saturn’s Ring (Boolean logic)
Five activities where learners utilize Boolean logic in conditionals in their code to obtain rock samples from Ganymede and precious metals from Saturn’s ring.

Unit 10: Running out of time: Dinosaur Run ( Events and Variables)
Three activities where learners combine different event blocks to sneak past the dinosaur, navigate through the temple, and use the Time Gate to teleport back.

Hi, I'm Mareeka Edwards, a proud homeschooling mom with a background in Early Childhood Montessori Education. Before pursuing my passion for teaching, I worked as a Medical Laboratory Technician and was on the path to becoming a Chemical Engineer. However, due to unforeseen circumstances, I had to pause my Chemical Engineering studies. But as they say, "Everything happens for a reason." This led me to open my own tutoring company in 2011, which eventually grew into themed summer camps, a home daycare, and now, online tutoring with Outschool.

Teaching is my passion, and I firmly believe that learning takes many forms. In our home, we’re always exploring new ideas or honing existing skills.

I’m excited to teach Math, Phonics, Reading & Comprehension, Spelling, Coding, and Science classes for learners aged 4 to 12.

In my classroom, learners will have their mics on throughout the session to encourage interaction and collaboration. I kindly ask that everyone raise their hands before answering questions and show respect by not speaking over one another. My goal is to create a classroom environment that feels like home—where learners can be themselves and express their thoughts freely.
