Class Experience: In this engaging 45-minute group class, learners ages 11-14 will develop foundational paragraph writing skills using the 4-Square Writing Method—a simple yet effective visual tool for organizing thoughts into clear and cohesive paragraphs. This class builds confidence and clarity in writing, perfect for students looking to strengthen their skills. Students Will Learn: -The essential components of a strong paragraph: topic sentence, supporting details, and concluding sentence. -How to organize their ideas effectively using the 4-Square Writing Method. -Techniques to analyze and improve poorly written paragraphs. We Will Cover: -The structure of a paragraph and its key elements. -Tips for brainstorming, organizing, and developing ideas. -Practical applications for writing strong paragraphs in essays, emails, and everyday communication. Class Structure: Introduction and Discussion: -The class begins with an interactive question related to the learner’s experience (e.g., “What’s your favorite activity, and why do you enjoy it?”). This discussion will set the stage for their writing topic. -Students will brainstorm what makes a paragraph effective and share their thoughts to assess their current understanding. Lesson Presentation: -I will introduce the 4-Square Writing Method using a visual aid and relatable examples. -Together, we’ll analyze a poorly written paragraph, followed by a strong one, discussing the strengths and weaknesses of each. Writing Activity: -Students will use the 4-Square template to organize their ideas and write their own paragraphs. -Volunteers will be invited to share their drafts for constructive feedback from peers and me. Wrap-Up and Homework Assignment: -I’ll provide practical tips for revising their paragraphs as homework, with an option to submit for additional feedback after class. Teaching Style: -My teaching approach is interactive and supportive, combining slides for visual learning, discussions for active participation, and real-world examples to help students connect concepts to practical applications. This is a highly interactive class where learners will: -Share ideas and thoughts during brainstorming sessions. -Analyze and discuss example paragraphs. -Provide and receive peer feedback in a collaborative environment. Outcome: -By the end of class, students will leave with a well-organized paragraph (that may need further editing) and a solid understanding of how to craft clear, detailed, and effective writing pieces.
