This course will take learners from writing basic, simple sentences, through building on those simple sentences, to finishing with formal multiple-sentence paragraphs. Classes will include grammar, punctuation, and parts of speech discussions, using the CUPS acronym (capitalization, usage of grammar, punctuation, and spelling) and a sandwich analogy for the paragraphs. All learning will happen through the use of a Google Slides presentation. There will be nothing additional outside of the Outschool Zoom classroom needed. Learners should bring a pencil and paper to each class. Learners should be able to write simple words to take this class. There will be no outside assignments or homework assigned in this class, but if a learner does not complete the in-class writing, the learner should complete it outside of class and submit it to the teacher using the Outschool messaging system.

over 4 WeeksUnit 1: Basic Sentences
Lesson 1:
Basic Sentences 1
Learners will look at a picture and be guided through writing a simple sentence. The teacher will encourage learners to write a sentence about 4 or 5 words long and use a whiteboard for support. There will be reminders to use capital letters to begin the sentence and periods to end it. Learners will begin understanding parts of speech by learning and identifying nouns. After each new sentence, learners will be given a break by being able to draw a picture to go with the sentence.

Lesson 2:
Basic Sentences 2
During this class, the teacher will begin to encourage learners to try to write without copying and check their work after they write the sentence, thus beginning to learn independent writing.

Unit 2: Complex Sentences
Lesson 3:
Complex Sentences 1
Learners will look at a picture and write a simple sentence. After identifying the noun, learners will be encouraged to add at least one adjective to the sentence. The class will discuss what an adjective is and how to add it to the sentence, writing the longer sentence. Finally, the learners will work on adding a verb or preposition/place. There will be continued encouragement to use CUPS as they work. The teacher will support with the whiteboard.
