Everybody will face adversity at some point in their lifetime. Some are born facing it and others encounter it, but if you can overcome adversity then you can achieve anything. My goal for this course is to demonstrate to learners that they can overcome adversity by showing them how others who came before them achieved greatness. We will explore how to overcome, and build on tools that your child can take with them as they face real-world scenarios. Throughout this course, I will ask your child to contemplate "what if" scenarios, and discuss how different choices have various consequences. The goal of this is to guide your child's thinking into making choices that will result in positive consequences, no matter what adversity they face.

The following people will be discussed for about 30 minutes, and then we will spend about 20 minutes completing scenarios and discussing leadership development: Oprah Winfrey, Bethany Hamilton, Harriet Tubman, Jim Carrey, Edna Campbell (and other athletes), Helen Keller, Stephen Hawking, and Tyler Perry.

We will discuss who the person is and what they are famous for achieving, and then we will dig backwards into their history to find out how they became successful. We will find out that they faced harsh obstacles, some from childhood, some from physical ailments, and some from choices that they made. Nonetheless, they will all go down in history for their strength and achievement. We will find out how, and instill those lessons within ourselves so that when we face obstacles, we will be ready.

I will present a PowerPoint format that outlines who each person is, what they have achieved, the struggles that they overcame, and how they overcame those struggles. Material presented within the PowerPoint presentation will be summarized from the below sources: 1) https://www.familius.com/8-famous-people-who-overcame-obstacles/ 2) https://www.nationalparks.org/connect/blog/beacon-resilience-and-love-harriet tubman#:~:text=At%2013%20years%20old%2C%20Tubman,the%20rest%20of%20her%20life. 3) https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-2003-jun-10-sp-wnbacol10-story.html 4) https://thesouthernvoice.com/overcoming-adversity-the-helen-keller-story/ 5) https://www.goodtherapy.org/blog/Climb-and-Maintain-Tyler-Perry-Talks-Psychology-Resiliency - Oprah Winfrey - Chosen for the struggles of her childhood. She was raised by parents who could not read, she was abused throughout her childhood, and she was rejected multiple times at the start of her television career. - Bethany Hamilton - She lost her arm in a shark attack at a young age and became a professional surfer nonetheless. Now, she has four children and teaches young people to love surfing as much as she does. - George Washington (and other Presidents) - Most of our Presidents during the first 100 years after the founding of the nation grew up in very poor circumstances and educated themselves in order to become wise and influential. - Harriet Tubman - Harriet escaped slavery herself, then made many trips back to her slaveholder's plantation in order to help others escape on the Underground Railroad. She put herself at risk of death over and over again, and became known as "Moses" for her work as a conductor. - Jim Carrey - Jim is one of the most famous actors of our generation, and he grew up extremely poor. He and his family lived out of their van, and he worked extremely hard to provide for his family as a teenager. - Edna Campbell (and other athletes): Edna is a famous WNBA star who survived breast cancer, and now advocates for women's health around the country. - Helen Keller: Helen became deaf, blind, and mute as a toddler and through the discipline of her teacher she was able to learn how to communicate and live a full life. - Stephen Hawking: Extremely accomplished theoretical physicist and cosmologist despite battling motor neuron disease from his early 20s until his death in 2018. - Tyler Perry: Born in New Orleans into extreme poverty, he dropped out of high school and was homeless off and on through his younger years as he built his career. - JK Rowling: JK Rowling originally wrote the idea for the Harry Potter series of books on a napkin while on a train ride. She was a poor and single mother who was in and out of work.

Hey there! My name is Emily Kendall. My passion for education is to make it fun and purposeful for each student that I get the privilege to interact with!

I am currently a research fellow, earning my PhD in education at the University of Oklahoma. The specialty of my research is to arm students with skills and knowledge to transition from school and into adulthood - no matter what age, it is never too early or too late! I also serve as a military reservist, Lieutenant in the US Coast Guard.

I earned my associate degree in child psychology, then my bachelor of science in education from Liberty University, and then my master of science in special education from Johns Hopkins University.

I teach classes that are based on real-life experience and literature. If a student can connect a concept to an experience, then they are engaging in valuable learning!

For example, my one on one tutoring sessions typically involve the interest of a student (ex. cooking), and my lesson will be constructed around famous chefs/ bakers from history, utilizing math and science skills, even marketing, business, and finance, as these play a role in a career or hobby surrounding cooking.

Please message me with any specific concerns or requests for your child, and let's get started!
