In this course, we will discuss the following: - What morals, values, and ethics are, and where they come from. - Students will discuss parts of their life that they consider valuable, and how their morality and ethics are grown from those things. - Students will learn how morality and ethics are cultivated from values by discussing the studies of six major philosophers: I will introduce and discuss the teachings of Aristotle, Plato, Socrates, Hume, Nietzsche, and Kant. - I will lead the students in an activity where they determine what morality and ethics mean to them based on the teachings of the philosophers covered in class. - Students will then practice making scenario-based decisions around their morals, values, and ethics. These scenario-based questions will be tapered around situations they may encounter in school (example: while in class, a teacher says something that is factually incorrect. How might you handle this situation and why would you handle it that way?). - Lastly, we will discuss how these three aspects build on each other to make a solid leader. We will practice leadership scenarios based on moral and ethical decision-making. Please Note: We will not discuss any extreme situations in this course, such as death, murder, drugs, sex, violence, etc. If an extreme or serious point is brought up by a student, I will refer that student back to his/her parents for a more serious discussion. I will also send the parent a message via OutSchool so that they can follow up. This class is created to help students build solid leadership skills only. Part of becoming a good leader is understanding your own values, morals, and ethics.

I have served as a middle and high school teacher/ counselor for many years. In this capacity, I have watched teenagers develop their own moral compass with or without the information that they need in order to do it well. I have learned about philosophy in the processes of helping to guide them to sound decision-making practices, and hope to share that knowledge with even more students on this platform.
